Is DeLay done?

Is he toast?  Out of here?  It looks like the Whitehouse has turned on DeLay, but will he go away? I don't think so, not without an electoral defeat-- not without losing seats in 2006. A quick look around the rightwing blogs, and there's been no mention against DeLay. And the DrudgeReport hardly moves the Republican machine like it used too. So what if it's in the NYTimes that DeLay paid his wife $500K over the past 5 years, that's not the sort of corruption that Republicans will yield for-- too par for the course. A 3rd DeLay Travel Controversy?  Ok, WaPost, but is it on Fox News?

DeLay, not Rove (none / 0)

I think you meant that the Whitehous has turned on DeLay.  It's nice to dream about turning on Rove, but that's not gonna happen.

Re: DeLay, not Rove (none / 0)

Yea, corrected, cause that just isn't gonna happen, but Rove turning on DeLay, and their both sticking it out is pretty good.

DNC Attacks DeLay with ScandalMan Page (none / 0)

The DNC has placed web ads on several blogs leading back to a page on the official DNC site which is devoted to attacking Tom DeLay.

The ads "Scandal Man" theme picturing DeLay against a police photo type background hits DeLay with little subtlety. Corruption, ethics violations, and abuse of power are up front. From the site:

Meet Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX), the man Republicans have chosen as their Majority Leader in the House of Representatives.

Tom DeLay is at the center of a bewildering array of investigations into corruption, abuse of power, and ethics violations.

As the courts and committees investigate DeLay's misdeeds and hand down indictments, keeping track of all the scandals can be a full-time job. So we thought it would helpful to offer folks this quick and easy guide.

The page enumerates the DeLay scandals and mentions the word 'bribery' once and 'scandal' ten times.

The DNC has jumped in with both feet in attacking DeLay

That's exactly what I'm talking about! (none / 0)

Yeah! Now let's see them say it out loud. Let's play dog pile on the bug man. Turn him into the symbol of the Republican party for the next twenty years.

Drudge is usually a good indicator of where the Noise Machine is pondering.

He's definitely an early test bed.

Missed Opportunities (none / 0)

I know this isn't really the point here, but why didn't we publicize some of these ethical lapses (the Chinese and Russian trips in particular) in the 90s? Why is it that we have to wait until now to find this out? I can't imagine how much other stuff is out there on every other politician that we either don't bother to find out or are afraid for some reason or another to publicize.

By the way, it would take an enormous scandal of Watergate-like proportions to drive him out. Although I have to say that the picture of him on Drudge was just too pathetic.

Not without a fight (none / 0)

His grip on the House caucus is too tight.

Unless these stories are the House caucus sticking the shiv in his side, I don't expect him to be gone before 2006.  If it comes down to DeLay v. Bush, Bush will just be marginalized by Congress that much faster into lame duckdom.

The only things that will take DeLay down is if his underlings in the House turn on him or he loses in 2006.  The White House can attack him all it wants, but the only thing that will get them is a Democratic House.

Re: Not without a fight (none / 0)

I saw a poll in the Chicago Tribune the other day (I was gonna diary it and was away from my PC) from the Houston Chronicle.  These scandals are hurting him.  45% of his constituents said if the electionw as today they WOULD NOT vote for him.I think only 36% said they WOULD vote... Not great numbers for Delay.  Of course he has a year and a half to repair himself, but if we keep hammering he becomes beatable with a moderate/conservative Dem.

What we Need (3.00 / 1)

Whether he goes down or not, we need a list someplace of currently serving House Members who have received campaign money and other considerations from DeLay's Leadership PAC and other RNCC committees he controls as well as 527's he sponsors.  At the very least we need a usable list of the contributors to these entities so we can run searches and use them to question members and candidates in their own district.  It is the best way to "share the guilt" no matter what ultimately happens to DeLay.

Re: What we Need (none / 0)

I think I saw something to this effect on Kos several weeks ago, but I'm not sure.  Yes!  A permanent list of who Hot Tub Tommy raised money for and from would be a great asset.

I am noticing that if you're on life support,
like his dad was - Delay can be pretty good
about cutting you off.

Mother Teresa, if she had that money - would
have been able to work miracles.

DeLay, Frist, NY Times (none / 0)

There are a couple more articles in the NY Times that touch on Tom DeLay, Bill Frist, and the independence of the judiciary.

The first is an editorial which blasts DeLay and Cornyn for their threatening comments regarding judges:

It was appalling when the House majority leader threatened political retribution against judges who did not toe his extremist political line. But when a second important Republican stands up and excuses murderous violence against judges as an understandable reaction to their decisions, then it is time to get really scared.

The second is an article detailing how Frist has backed away from the comments of DeLay. Frist says in the article that the judiciary is independent

Disagreeing with Representative Tom DeLay, the Texas Republican who is the House majority leader, Dr. Frist said he saw no need to examine why federal judges chose not to intervene in Ms. Schiavo's case after Congress had passed an emergency law that let them do so.

"I believe we have a fair and independent judiciary today," said Dr. Frist, who declined to comment directly on Mr. DeLay. "I respect that."

Senator Harry Reid is quoted in the article:

"The Republican legislative leaders in Congress have forgotten what our Constitution's all about," Mr. Reid said. "If they don't get what they want, they attack who's ever around. Now they're after the courts."

Another Democrat, Representative Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland, the No. 2 Democrat in the House also weighed in:

"The presumption that somehow we are going to threaten judges or demand certain outcomes from judges is antithetical to a free people under law,"

Whoaaa!!! Another Scandal! Trip 2 Russia (none / 0)

Delay took in 440,000.00 from an
offshore (Bahamanian) entity
and a trip to Russia in a package
deal that was set up to have
been paid for by a non profit
organization.

Only problem being that the non profit
can't seem to show how they handled all
that money - or if it was ever received
at all... and guess who was sending it..

Mr. Indian Casino himself, Jack Abramoff.

So lets recap.

  1. 440,000 dollars go toward a lobbying effort.
  2. It arrives in the form of a transfer from russia
  3. It was purportedly to have covered a trip
to russia.
4. The recipient can't show how it arrived.

We are talking about 440,000 bucks here and
they don't have any answers at all..?
This is bigger than the trip to korea,
this thing was paid for directly
by an offshore company.

We don't want him gone.  He's a huge liability to the Reps.  We want him to stick around and continue getting coverage like this.
