Bolton committee vote delayed

From the diaries. I think we are going to win this one. The vote won't take place for three weeks pending further investigation. The fat duck is warming up to start quacking--Chris

I have been watching C-SPAN 2 which has been covering the committee that was debating the John Bolton nomination to the U.N.  For some reason, Senator Lugar wanted to push this through the committee and get the nomination to the Senate floor.  I was amazed that Sen. Voinovich (R-OH), Sen. Chaffee, and Sen. Hagel voiced some opposition to having the committee vote today.  Senators Biden and Dodd did a great job demonstrating that there was still more to learn about Bolton.  They were successful in delaying the vote.

Senator Lugar seemed to be unsure as to how to proceed.  Was Frist behind the scenes pushing this committee vote?  Also, Sen. Norm Coleman is an idiot (can I say that here?).     And Sen. George Allen is full of himself.    Of course, this is just my opinion.  What do you think?

I think that Norm Coleman is a huge idiot.  Wellstone would have stomped him.

Re: since you asked... (none / 0)

As a resident of the city Norm Coleman used to run, back when he was a Democrat, I personally know he's an idiot.  Furthermore, he's a political opportunist idiot-- he'll say or do anything to kiss the Republican establishment's ass.  After all, he is the one calling for Kofi Annan's resignation.

We gotta find someone with half a brain to run against him in '08.

Re: since you asked... (3.00 / 1)

I understand that Al Franken may, in fact, be in possession of a full brain...and a desire to get back at Coleman for the way he smeared Wellstone and exploited his death.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...Haaaawwwww! (none / 0)

We is WINNIN'ONE!

Things are turnin' baby.

This matters. Bush losing one matters.

It's precedent for the judicial fights.

And we are winning this on the merits without filibustering.

Not the least of the good news is that the Wingnuts will be attacking the moderates on this.

I swear one of these days another Rep. Senator is going to follow Jeffords out of the party.

This is how it begins!

I assume (none / 0)

those who were pushing to get the vote over with were hoping to get Bolton in under the cover of the Papal smokescreen, so to speak. Now, of course, it'll be three more weeks of playing apologist for this arrogant lunatic (who I still think is the perfect guy to represent the Bush administration to the world).

Perhaps the Dems should take a page out of Gee-Dub's playbook and call on the Reeps to offer "political amnesty" to anyone who wants to vote their conscience and tell Bolton where to stick his extraneous ten floors of the UN building.

Yeah, I'm cynical.

Call Voinovich (none / 0)

Steve Clemons reports that Voinovich is being targeted by Reep regressives and his office is being flooded with negative feedback on his actions today. The post provides links to those who are orchestrating the attack and to contact info to call in and voice support for Voinovich.
Yeah, I'm cynical.

Re: Call Voinovich (3.00 / 1)

I just e-mailed him and I live in Ohio.  I will call his office to thank him for his courage (even though I would never vote for him).

Voinovich can do what he wants (none / 0)

He is one of the strongest re-elects in the entire nation.  He could be caught eating babies, and he'd still get re-elected.

Voinovich has an usual level of trust for a guy who's fairly far right.  He is an honest guy who is simply voicing doubts about a not honest guy.

The GOP machine can't buffalo Voinovich.  I'd like to see them try.

GOPers are becoming acutely aware that the Noise Machine is not their friend.

What do you think? (none / 0)

Well, that there isn't a single Republican of any quality in the Senate today.  I believe that Voinovich's and Hagel's objections are just for show and that they will be good little boys in the end.

Allen is an ass (none / 0)

He was my Congressman and then my governor before becoming my Senator.

I need to read-up on Voinovich... (none / 0)

but it seemed he was just suprised by the data. As such I feel confident some leverage will be found to dissuade him from voting against sending it to the floor...eventually.

Of course we can always hope there was a real case of "attack of conscience" when it comes to sending out patently ugly humans to be our diplomats...

Keep up the Coleman Attacks (none / 0)

Keep pushing the mantra that Norm Coleman is just plain dumb -- or any other parallel point you want to make.  In fact, it would be great politics to make the point that he does not measure up to Harold Stassen, whom FDR and then Truman nomanated as delegate to the founding meeting of the UN in San Francisco.  (Harold Stassen is still respected as an honored Republican in Minnesota).  Coleman would not really know how to get himself out of that contradiction if someone presented him with it.

Anyhow, it will help things in 2008 if Coleman is viewed around the country is just dumb.
