Conclave Starts Today

It is the biggest election of the year (sorry UK), and MyDD can barely cover it at all. Oh well. Here is how it will all begin:
A Mass "for the election of the supreme pontiff" will be celebrated in the Vatican Basilica at 10 a.m. Monday, Navarro-Valls said.

The conclave begins Monday at 4:30 p.m., when the cardinals leave the Hall of Blessings and walk in a procession to the Sistine Chapel, Navarro-Valls said.

Once in the Sistine Chapel, each cardinal will swear an oath, of which secrecy is just one part. The cardinals will also swear to observe the changes to the process that John Paul put in place in 1996 and to faithfully carry out the duties of the office.

The cardinals have the option of holding one vote Monday.

An interesting bit of information is just how Italian and European heavy the college of Cardinals actually is.
CONCLAVE GEOGRAPHY

Europe 58; Latin America: 20; North America: 14; Africa: 11; Asia: 10; Oceania: 2

Leading countries: Italy 20; United States 11; Germany 6; Spain 6; France 5; Brazil 4; Canada 3; Colombia 3; India 3; Mexico 3; Poland 3

Clearly, this is not representative of the number of Catholics in each country.

Paddy Power's latest odds have Ratzinger the clear favorite at 3-1. He is followed by three other Europeans, as the chances of a Latin or African Pope seem to fade. My personal favorite, Maradiaga, has slipped all the way from second last week to tenth now, at 16-1.

Then again, no one really has any idea, least of all the people placing bets at Paddy Power.

God's cosmic sense of humor (none / 0)

Just when you thought the mixture of politics and religion could not possibly get any stranger. From the N.Y. Post, courtesy of America Blog, Leading Candidate for Pope has Nazi past:

Well, well, well...the leading candidate to become the next pope is Germany's Joseph Ratzinger. Today's New York Post reports he has a Nazi history:

A "fuhrer" furor is dogging the papal candidacy of Germany's top Roman Catholic cleric -- over revelations he was a member of the Hitler Youth.

Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger -- a favorite to become the next pontiff -- joined the Nazi children's corps in 1941 as a 14-year-old and was later an anti-aircraft gunner.

At one point, he guarded a factory where slaves from a concentration camp were forced to work. He was later shipped to Hungary, where he reportedly saw Jews persecuted.

Hmm, maybe there's a reason his nickname is "God's Rottweiler."

The Papal Chase (none / 0)

John Nichols has an interesting economic analysis of The Papal Chase:

But on the economic justice front - which, along with opposition to preemptive war is a zone where the church was frequently at odds with the world's most powerful leaders and nations - the competition becomes more intriguing.

Elements of this race (none / 0)

The elements of this race are the
structure of the election, which was changed
under John Paul II, s.t. the conclave itself
was almost entirely appointed by John Paul,
the process was changed s.t. the decision
would be faster, and there are additional
staff that are sweeping for bugs.

The vatican still leaks.

The politics preceding the enclave
were favouring a latin american appt.
but now its detente between the old world
and the new world.

The vote to appoint a pole, the last time,
was not entirely predictable.

What is clear is that the church positions
will in all likelihood remain conservative
as a result of the latest political
maneuvers.

It'll be black smoke today.

Hey if you've ever used 'web watcher'
its great, esp. for blogs. Because
the owner of a blog can change the entry
on the fly - its a great tool to watch
how articles are redacted.

I must say (none / 0)

Hearing the litany of saints as they walked in was very powerful. I'm not a Catholic but rather a protestant. However, viewing the last judgment by Michaelangelo plus the litany was very moving.

About Maradiaga (none / 0)

Chris,

Have you googled Maradiaga recently?  I saw your recent posts about his statements on debt and the environment, which was very encouraging, but after I looked him up, I also saw that he attributed the sexual abuse scandals in the American Church to the media.  Here's the money quote:

"The U.S. media appears ... to act with a fury that reminds me at times of Diocletian and Nero and more recently of Stalin and Hitler," Rodriguez Maradiaga said. "The church should be free of this kind of treatment."  It's here

Hate to tell you, but this is not our guy.  I know that we progressives don't really have any obvious candidate this time, but I'm pretty sure it's not Maradiaga.
