Bizarro America: New U.N. ambassador hates the U.N.

Today we learn this:

President Bush has chosen Undersecretary of State John R. Bolton, a longtime critic of the United Nations and a hard-liner on arms control, to be the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, according to government officials.

And by "longtime critic," the Post means this:

"There's no such thing as the United Nations."
"If the U.N. secretary building in New York lost 10 stories, it wouldn't make a bit of difference."
"Moreover, many Republicans in Congress - and perhaps a majority - not only do not care about losing the General Assembly vote but actually see it as a 'make my day' outcome. Indeed, once the vote is lost, and the adverse consequences predicted by the U.N.'s supporters begin to occur, this will simply provide further evidence to many why nothing more should be paid to the U.N. system."

Somebody wake me up when we nominate Jessica Simpson to be the U.S. ambassador to intelligence.

A perfect fit for Bizarro Bush (none / 0)

This is in keeping with Bush's Bizarro Cabinet apointees. The ones I remember:

A Secretary of Education who lobbied to eliminate the Department of Education.
A Secretary of the Interior who had worked as a pro-pollution lobbyist
A Secretary of Defense who had never seen combat (an improvement on Cheney, a SecDef who had never served in the military)
An EPA chief from the most polluted state in the Union (make that second-most, once GWB got through with Texas)
A Vice-President who seems to be the President's superior, not his subordinate (and who actually picked the entire Bizarro Cabinet, including himself)
And, of course, a President with no political experience, a military deserter who ran as a hawk, and a drug-using convicted criminal who ran on "values".

It just occurred to me (none / 0)

They may have nominated him in order to clear the way for Clinton 2006. By putting someone up there to placate the loonies today, 43 can get some breathing space in order to put 42 in the top spot. Would Clinton as President of the World make it less likely for Hillary to run in 2008?

Does anyone find this really that surprising? It seems to fall right in line with the right wing in general and this administration in particular's belief that the United Nations is a worthless illegitimate organization that imposes on our own sovereignty. I may be paranoid, but this appointment almost seems like it opens up the possibility that this administration could eventually threaten to leave the UN, in one form or another, as a whole. History has always been an author of ironies and Bush's separation from the UN could simply be another one since his father once held this position. Then again, maybe I'm just paranoid.

Republican Bench Not Very Deep (none / 0)

We see people like Bolton and Negroponte recycled mainly because the Republican bench is so thin, more than ideology. You keep a hack joke like John Snow in office because you can't get anyone reputable to do the job. The Republican Party is running on empty in terms of new talent.

They're recycling those few who they know will be loyal and push their corporatist agenda without objection. There are plenty of Reeps out there who are better-suited to fill the offices, but they'd actually want to fill the offices, not just serve as mouthpieces for the Cheney-Rumsfeld axis. This is the story that's come out again and again from those who have left the administration.
