More on CNN

Jerome and I were pretty hard on CNN yesterday. Good for us:
we don't know if you've been watching judy woodruff's inside politics for the past couple of weeks. if not, we'll save you the trouble.

judy has begun airing a new segment on her show called "inside the blogs." during this small 2 minute piece, "blog reporter" jacki schechner and producer abbi tatton sit at two computers and read blogs. that's right. they sit there and read blogs. out loud.(...)

our interns poured through the transcripts of inside politics and documented every mention of every blog during this new segment since feb. 14, and the results are clear:

  • mentions of conservative blogs: 54
  • mentions of liberal blogs: 29
to even count that many liberal occurences, we have to cut cnn some wide slack on definitions. here are our parameters:

jacki has labeled andrew sullivan as "centrist" (march 1). sorry, but we steadfastly count sully as a con.

jacki calls jeff jarvis's buzz machine as liberal (feb. 28). so does jeff himself. in our opinion, anyone that reads instapundit on an hourly basis, and has more conservative than liberal links on their blogroll is suspect when they wear the "lefty" tag, but for the sake of as much balance as we can squeeze out of this exercise, we'll call buzz machine a lefty site.

we have to assume that jacki's mention of the "brad log" is a reference to brad de long's site, an obviously liberal blog, and the "columbia journal review" is the blog "campaign desk" at cjr's site . we also count jay rosen's press think as liberal, though jay is more concerned with how the media operates than political agenda.

we also spot jacki and abbi wonkette on the liberal side, though the only thing liberal about ana marie is her doses of snark.(...)

still, with 6 references each of captains quarters and vodka pundit, 4 mentions of instapundit and whizbang, the calling of little green footballs as one of the "blogstars" and the powerline blog as a "very important blog" ( feb. 17), it seems that the conservative total of 54 far outpaces the measly 29 mentions of the liberal sites. granted, dkos got referenced a whopping 8 times, but that leaves a sorry 21 times for all the other liberals (including wonkette, jay rosen and jeff jarvis). one mention of atrios! none whatsoever of tom tomorrow, jeralyn merritt, eric alterman, jerome armstrong, max sawicky, annatopia, billmon, david neiwert, nathan newman, jeanne d'arc, dave johnson, or the gang at tapped or first draft or corrente. or even skippy!

Liberal blogges hold a four to three traffic edge on conservatives, and yet CNN mentions conservative blogs by a 2 to 1 margin in their new blog segment. I'd be offended if this sort of thing wasn't so typical. At least it is not as bad as the gap between liberal and conservative think tank citations in the national media.

This is irresponsible (none / 0)

I'll be interested to hear what sanctions CNN employs against Jacki Schechner for this obscene bias.

Judging by the ratings, you might not have seen today's Inside Politics. Here is what Jacki Schenchner said why they are talking about blogs:

We're hoping that segments like this help people get more interested and ingrigued in what the blogs are talking about and go online and take a look at them.

So CNN is now giving airtime to direct traffic to right-wing blogs?

You can yell at them here.

Judy Judy Judy (none / 0)

It's Judy Woodruff - she airs Novak's lies without even wiping. What else could we expect?

CNN BlogReporting (none / 0)

Watched the blogging segment on CNN today, and thought both of these gals veered between being outright ignorant about Blogs.....bloopers like Sullivan Being "liberal", [which is stupidly uninformed], and Instapundit [also "liberal"]; likewise, not so.   These ladies are not "in to it".  While mentioning Kos a lot, they emphasized right wing Blogs far more.  This is not fair and balanced reporting; it just isn't reporting, and I really don't think Judy Woodruff knows the difference.

Re: CNN BlogReporting (none / 0)

I loved the way they read a direct quote of DailyKos without attribution. DailyKos doesn't create content, individuals create content.

I also liked the way they mentioned "Creeping Meatball" because of links to two MSM stories.

When Shaw retired, I kept watching out of habit. I don't know if that is enough of a reason any more.

CNN mentions conservative blogs by a 2 to 1 margin

Seems more like 4:1.

What's the point of this segment anyway? (none / 0)

People on CNN or other tv news networks love to talk about how blogs are a new, fast-growing, different kind of journalism. So why report on them? Does CNN browse The New York Times and The Washington Post on air reading random paragraphs aloud? Do they play random snippets of Brian Williams from NBC? If blogging is a new medium, respect it and let it do what it does, don't follow it ignorantly, poking and prodding it and misrepresenting it!

a couple things (none / 0)

they look at how influential blogs are on politics, how they impact media coverage, and other stuff. for example, today they had the results of a poll that looked at how familiar the public is, and how much of the population reads blogs regularly.

cnn sucks, BUT (none / 0)

there are less liberals than conservatives out there. maybe, since the point is exposing people, and since one third of the population is conservative, they're trying to throw out names that these conservative people will check out.

Re: cnn sucks, BUT (none / 0)

well, according to last year's exit polls:
33% conservative
20% liberal
40-something percent moderate

Re: cnn sucks, BUT (none / 0)

I consider myself moderate like Bill Clinton and Wes Clark.  Left of center.

Actually, (none / 0)

most people tend to side with the "liberal" viewpoint on issues, but less people self-identify as liberals because the media and the Reep ideologues have turned "liberal" into a slur.

And exit polls have very little to do with the composition of the country-at-large. Of course, neither do blog visits.

Yeah, I'm cynical.

Sullivan is a self-confessed republican. (none / 0)

He has admitted this many times on his blog. He basically cut from the cloth of log cabin republicans because he's gay. There's no controversy here...he is conservative.

Wonkette is complete drivel. Posts worthless sarcastic posts that aren't funny nor witty. She is garbage through and through. Liberal? No, just lame.

Re: Sullivan is a self-confessed republican. (none / 0)

Nah, Wonkette rocks. She makes me laugh. Its good to see a blog of a different frame. While it may not provoke the discussion you get on more in depth sites like this one, that's not a necessary element of every single blog. I happily read both sites regularly for different reasons.

Judy Needs Her Job (none / 0)

But she's doing a disgraceful job with Jacki and Abbi.  They are so square they think Wonkette is Liberal, and cite Jarvis as well.  They have few presentation skills, and their ignorance coupled with their lack of poise is embarrassing.  Leave it to CNN to screw up totally on Blogs, and of course, Judy is still at it doing her duty flogging the White House Talking Points.  I'd be willing to bet that Judy doesn't know one Blog from the other.   And Judy...you're supposed to be a journalist...Andrew Sullivan is a well known conservative, and edited and contributed for National Review.  Does Woodruff think The National Reveiw is liberal?  Judy, cool it. Learn your subject, and start reporting accurately with real pros.
