Abu Ghraib Two

Inspired by ben114's diary. The Schiavo wingnuttery is nearly proving the equal of Abu Ghraib in pushing Bush's poll numbers south. Here are the numbers from the five polls that were in the field sometime during the past seven days, compared with the numbers from the last installment of each poll:

Gallup's internals show the movement coming from the Republican base:
The new poll found the largest drop for Bush came among men, self-described conservatives and churchgoers. Independent political analysts said the drop may reflect opposition to the White House and Congress intervening in the Terri Schiavo matter. "You have to wonder if people didn't feel that the president and the Congress couldn't be spending their time working on Social Security and other problems," said Charlie Cook, editor of the non-partisan Cook Political Report.
Long-term repercussions are anyone's guess. For now, however, clearly Bush and Republican leaders have been damaged by this travesty.

Will the Dems capitalize? (2.00 / 1)

I just sent Boxer and Feingold an email asking them why nobody has introduced a repeal of the SUV tax credit.

Why hasn't a Democrat introduced a new bill for CAFE standards?

How about introducing a bill to increase Medicaid for patients in Terri Schiavo's position?

How about introducing a bill to allow patients to sue their HMOs?

Why hasn't a single Senator objected to unanimous consent?

I don't understand the Dems strategy at all? Does anybody have a clue what Harry Reid and the Dems are up to? My concern is that Harry Reid knows exactly what he's doing and likes the way this session of Congress is going.

Parliamentary maneuvering to block legislation, at this point, would take place in a very tense atmosphere. At a time when Frist has nearly gathered the votes it would take to exercise his "nuclear option" to eliminate the filibuster, there may not be any Democratic Senators willing to stand in the path of a bill that the Republican leadership wants to move. Doing so, particularly alone and against the backdrop of a majority ready to act and pass a bill -- even a lousy one like this -- risks casting the nuclear option in a more favorable light.

Interestingly, this latest Republican overreaching may itself imperil the viability of the nuclear option. Frist is just a few votes shy of nailing it down, but that count was before the whole country watched, disgusted, as Congressional Republicans bent the rules for short term gain (surprise!).

Now they'll return from their Easter recess and start trying to count votes for doing it yet again.

Either Michael Chertoff elevates the terror level, we announce the capture of some midlevel Al Qaeda guy in Iraq, or Bush strongarms OPEC to increase output again.
