It's Over: Dean has the Votes

The Dean camp says these 250 voting members (see extended entry) represent 241.75 votes, over the majority 214.25 needed to win (release, 2/4). The Fowler camp says that the interview reply by Fowler that "I would be happy to have Howard Dean be my executive director of the DNC" was "a lighthearted joke" and that "he was laughing when he said it, as was Judy". After first seeing this morning that the Georgia Delegation is on board, and that the New York delegation is on board, I get word that as of this morning, Dean has officially secured enough votes to become the next chairman of the DNC.

Stay tuned for an endorsement from Simon Rosenberg today. (ABC's The Note has already published the fact that Rosenberg is making a "major announcement" on a conference call with reporters at 1pm Eastern; my source tells me it's going to include an endorsement of Gov. Dean.)

It's over folks (and that includes you, the overconfident Mr. Fowler). For the first time in my five years of political awareness and involvement, I can experience what it's like to have my guy win.... Gore, John Courage for Congress, Dean, Kerry...

Update, Jerome: From the comments-- Simon Rosenberg concedes and endorses Dean-- "as good as we were, he [Dean] was better.... Dean overcame a lot of obstacles to win this race... I always knew this would be a longshot."

Sure, Simon is right, it was a longshot for him, and not all of the good ones get to win; but Simon ran an excellent race (Matt Stoller gets props as well), and when there's an open DNC Chair in the future, Rosenberg's got backing here.

Good news (none / 0)

I did not think Dean would or should be the one but obviously he will be, and the obvious mandate for change he brings can only be good news.

One thing that is now incumbent on all of us who consider ourselves reformers and progressives is to direct that energy to state parties as well.

As Ryan Lizza's article makes clear, one of the reasons so many state party chairs support Dean is because he's promised to direct 200K to each state party. As a principle, its a good one but in a lot of states, the state party operations are in no position to use that money wisely.

I hope to see attention here to what is going within the Democratic PArty at teh state level.

You are pointing out another area of reform. Not just in the money returning to the state, but the need for developing the management of the state level apparatus as well. I can only hope that Dean will focus on these issues so that the party is not caught unwares as it was in 2004.

Crimminy...

Have you even been to a State Democratic party meeting or event...if you had you would see 90% are retirees who wanted a hobby after retiring.

My party chairs keeps getting elected because they are they are the only ones willing to pay a substantial amount of money themselves for travel and expenses.

Whereas the Republican have been paying their state leaders for years. That way you can get the best people and not people who are running the party in their spare time or just the richies and bored house wives.

We need to put some more professionalisn into the states and along with this goes accountablity. Have you wondered just why so many states do not have even a website...this is why.

But if you want to hold on to a cheesy attack then go ahead...because you had to look hard to find that piece of crap.

Besides telling us how to live, think, marry, pray, vote, invest, educate our children and, die, the GOP has done a fine job of getting gov't out of our lives.

As for the tone, Parker, I can see you're as committed to conflict now as ever. There's nothing in what I wrote thats an "attack" -- only an observation, with which you agree, that state parties need more than money.

If you're looking for a fight, you won't get it from me. I'll be too busy trying to help build my state party; hope you're doing the same.

Dean's advantages include:

A bracing, aggressive message. Democrats "do not need to be mini-Republicans," Dean says in forums and interviews; what they need, he says, is a 50-state strategy that concedes the GOP nothing. He says the party should try harder for Latino and rural voters and persist in the South.
A proven commitment to strengthening the grass roots. Dean pioneered Internet fundraising and organizing as a primary candidate. Later he mobilized his Democracy for America network on behalf of candidates from president to school board. That's more important to most state party leaders than his image or ideology, as is his promise of $44 million over four years to upgrade staff and infrastructure.
Doggedness and the listening skills he honed as a doctor. Jim Pederson, chairman of the Arizona party, says Dean once called him to discuss the DNC race at 10:30 on a Saturday night. Gerald McEntee, head of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, says Dean talked to him four times.
The sense that he has learned from mistakes. McEntee endorsed him in the primaries, then un-endorsed him and called him "nuts." Does he still think that? "No," says McEntee, who is officially neutral in the DNC race. He says Dean has better advisers and knows "he can't take things for granted. He needs to strategize."
The stature to take on the Bush administration. Some Democrats say their elected officials have been articulate but ineffective. "We haven't seen that kind of commanding voice that ... people are craving," Pederson says.

Remarks from other Democrats suggest they don't see Dean in that role. "We're not looking for a spokesperson in the chairmanship," 2004 nominee John Kerry (news - web sites) said on NBC.

Terry McAuliffe, current DNC chairman, says he gave Dean a two-hour presentation on what a party chairman does. "Your job is to raise money and do the mechanics," he said in an interview. "It is not your job ... to set policy."

In recent TV appearances, Dean offered his opinion on two Cabinet votes and disagreed with Senate minority leader Harry Reid of Nevada on whether Antonin Scalia (news - web sites) would be tolerable as chief justice of the Supreme Court. Reid later noted his constituency is "much larger" than the 447-member DNC. Nancy Pelosi, the House minority leader, said she thinks Dean "would take his lead from us."

McEntee says he told Dean "he's got to be disciplined and careful" and not step on toes, his own or those of elected party leaders. He says Dean told him he might do more party building and less TV "because there's always this possibility that he'd lose some of that discipline that he's trying to form."

There is still some unease about Dean's grass-roots multitudes, whom he mobilized for his DNC bid. "His people tend to be a bit left," Pederson says, adding some DNC members in Arizona were "alarmed" at the avalanche of calls from them.

Dean advocates say his network and success so far are evidence that he was no flash in the pan. "It's great vindication for him," says Steve McMahon, a longtime Dean strategist. "It proves that he's the real dea

I'll be waiting for the actual vote on the DNC chair before I give one dime more to the Democratic Party.

However, I was just composing in my head a diary on why I'm a Democratic again after 7 years in the political wilderness.

So I guess that makes me an overcautious optimist. g

I've been resisting calling myself a Dem on these sites for a long time. Felt rootless politically, but couldn't stomach the "Don't Hit Me" Dem Party of the late 90s early Aughts.

So, that's a big step for me.

And I am a lifelong Yellow Dog Democrat who has never voted for a Republican.

But that is very, very easy when you live in Los Angeles, I must say.

In any case, I got used to losing...and their is a lot of scar tissue on my heart.

When I saw Dr. Dean a couple of weeks ago, he told us we had a lot of party growing to do in California, which has very conservative center and east of the state, as well. Let's just say, he is a very demanding boss, and we will be expected to do whatever we can.
