Blogging the DNC Meeting

Joe Rospars, DNC's new internet director, has set up a row of laptops and a wireless network here at the DNC meeting in Phoenix. The goal is to get DNC members introduced to blogging, and to get them to introduce themselves to you.

Tim Tagaris, back in DC, is getting the postings up on the Kicking Ass blog.

For a lot of these folks, just reading a blog is a new experience, much less writing. Everyone has to start someplace, though. I hope some of you will go comment and encourage these folks. I want to see blogging become an essential part of every political organization and campaign because I think it enables conversation

The content might seem a little light, but the real meeting happens tomorrow. Today has been caucus meetings--a lot of electing officers and such.

I'll post a report on tomorrow's meeting.

And if any of you are in Phoenix, these meetings are open to the public. You're welcome to stop by the Phoenix Wyndham and join us.

the fun part (3.00 / 1)

Has been having a chance to sit down and talk with some of these folks.

I had quite a conversation with Bill Winter, who is running for Congress from Colorado. He's another "fighting Dem."

He asked about how to get some blog buzz on his campaign. I suggested finding all the left bloggers in Colorado, inviting them to lunch, and listening.

Any other suggestions?

ideas (1.50 / 2)

yes, definitely get in touch with the colorado bloggers.  also, i'd suggest that the candidate or someone on his staff create accounts on the liberal community blogs (mydd, dkos, booman, mlw, etc.) and post diaries.  that's a good way to get to know the community, as well as the community getting to know a candidate.  make sure that once a diary is posted, they stick around and comment.  make sure they've got a website with a list of where they stand on the issues.  it doesn't have to be fancy, but you've got to get something up that people can refer to when they want to know where you stand.

and I have learned... (3.00 / 3)

...to stay out of the bar.

I went in for a glass of wine last night and got asked to run for secretary of the western caucus. After 2 glasses, I agreed.

Won today--55 1/2 to 28.  (Guam only gets 1/2 a vote)

This is how people get elected to these things.  It's pretty simple...

Re: and I have learned... (3.00 / 2)

Was that bar in the back of the building? It was, wasn't it? It was a "back room!" I knew it!

And I'll bet there was some smoke in there, too!

Were the doors closed?

It's true, though, isn't it? You just show up, and they need people to fill positions, and they just kind of hand it to you, because you seem like a decent sort, you're interested, and you agree to do it.

Only later, when you piss somebody off, do they put on their cynical glasses, and see that you and the people who convinced you to run were kind of chummy, hanging out at the bar together and all. So through those dark glasses, you've become not a friend or an acquaintance, but a "crony."

So, it's Boss Greenleaf now, is it?

Do you have a double-breasted suit you could wear? Can I send you some cigars?

And since I e-mailed you once -- which makes me a crony, too -- can you tell me how long I have to wait for a no-bid contract of some kind?

Anyway, congratulations!

Re: and I have learned... (none / 0)

Oh, Kagro, we are modern Democrats!

I am so sorry to disappoint you...but there was no smoke in the bar.

And we are up-front Democrats--the bar was in the front of the building.

Nevertheless, it was rather dark and shady. The seats had leather, if that helps.

And, you're right about how people get these positions, although I actually ran against an incumbent.  In this case, I think it was Newbie = Sucker.

Could you look up PDA? (none / 0)

I ran in to their National Director, Tim Carpenter at Steven Young's headquarters tonight. PDA had an Activist Training Workshop this morning.

Can you look them up tomorrow? They seem to be associated with William Rivers Pitt and support Christine Cegalis, although they haven't endorsed her yet. I'll ask Tim Carpenter why not tomorrow morning.
