Most people across the state and across the country are focusing on the major races and have been opining on the meaning behind wins and losses. Yes, Tim Kaine defeated Jerry Kilgore and handed Bush a huge loss because Bush tried to push a statistical tie into a GOP win (which backfired into a nearly double-digit loss). Yes, RON lost big on all four amendments here in Ohio. Yes, Ahnold got his ass handed to him and now the Republicans are blaming him for the Caleeforneea losses.
Incumbents bear brunt of voter backlash
- 21 incumbents were ousted in Stark County, most of them Republicans. The strongest GOPer on City Council finally lost her seat.
In my opinion, 21 incumbents losing their seats is NOT accidental. Most people in this county know who they usually vote for (heck, I was a victim to that because a lot of Democrats are just used to voting for the name "Regula"). Not anymore...people still know who they vote for, and they've decided to STOP voting for them.
Cirelli returns as Dems dominate council
- The Dems have always had a majority in City Council, now they have a HUGE advantage. The GOP Mayor (who is always seen slopping herself all over Bush) is in big trouble with her agenda and her next election bid.
Decades of GOP Mayors in Canton, Ohio is now possibly over. When Ward 8 votes Rosemary Diamond out (and they did), there's trouble for the Repugs right here in my city.
Democrats take control of Alliance City Council
- My good friend Cody Combs (Independent) chose not to run for re-election, and his seat is now occupied by another good friend, Steven Okey. Okey is joined by more Democrats now in Alliance. This predominantly red city has begun a swing towards the blue side of the aisle. Six of the 7 available seats were won by Democrats.
To give you a good idea of the swing in Alliance, just one year ago, I lost the city of Alliance by a vote of 5,206 to 3,198. In just 52 weeks, Democrats dominated the scene.
Take a look around the country, at small papers in every county. This is happening everywhere. In a small, off-year election, Republicans almost always dominate, because GOP voters are the most loyal to the voting booths. Not anymore. This is a huge sign and we'd better not ignore it. Voters are clearly unhappy with the direction everything is headed, from small city councils to conservative town mayors to southern state governors.
We must take advantage and we must supply real answers to the problems that we face, not spin andd excuses. The voters have spoken and they want change. Give it to them, Democrats. Give it to them now.
