Corzine Unveils New Ad, Forrester Attacks

The New Jersey Governor's race is coming to a close. With a healthy lead, Jon Corzine has released a new television spot which, if you live in or around New Jersey, you know is flooding the airwaves. It's incredibly impressive and should help put Doug Forrester away. This is a fact Forrester seems keenly aware of, which I'll get back to in a minute.

The ad, 'Carl,' is quite honestly devastating. If you've ever watched a Republican ad in awe and wondered why can't we make ads like that?, here's your answer. The ad features Carl Riccio, a young quadriplegic man talking about the hope of embryonic stem cell research, which Corzine supports and Forrester does not. He's the only speaker in the ad. Here's the transcript:

Almost three years ago now, I was in a wrestling match for my high school. I went to do a move and I was paralyzed from the neck down -- a quadriplegic.

Right now, the most hopeful thing for spinal cord injuries is embryonic stem cell research.
Doug Forrester doesn't support embryonic stem cell research. Therefore, I don't think he supports people like me and doctors who say a cure is coming.

Jon Corzine supports embryonic stem cell research. I think he's the best candidate for our Governor.

I've watched this ad a number of times now and it still hits me in the gut each and every time. Doug Forrester is running a campaign making false promises about tax cuts. It's total garbage. Never does Forrester talk about using the collective power of the people embodied in government to make people's lives better. That's what Corzine's campaign is about. That's what responsible progressive governance is all about. Sure, I want our guy to win this race. But this race and every race is about more than winning for our side. It's about making the world a better place. I know that sounds so corny, but if this ad can shake me out of the day to day back and forth of a political campaign, I can only imagine the impact it will have on others.

Forrester's response has been to attack Carl. No, I'm not kidding. This is what Forrester had to say about Carl on the public New Jersey Network. "My position is not known by this young man and I wouldn't expect necessarily that he would know this; he has been used for political purposes." Without even getting into Forrester's Robo-Nixon linguistic style, this is ridiculous. Carl Riccio, an adult, endorsed Jon Corzine. Forrester responds by saying that Carl doesn't know what he's talking about. In response, Carl put out a public statement slamming Forrester and reiterating his support for Corzine.

It has been brought to my attention, that Doug Forrester, has made comments to the effect, that I have been taken advantage of by me expressing myself supporting Senator Corzine, and specifically supporting his stance on embryonic stem cell research. I am releasing this statement to clear up any misunderstanding. I am completely aware that when I came out in support of Senator Corzine and his stance on embryonic stem cell research I would automatically be involved in controversy. That is the nature of politics, and sadly, the search for a cure for dozens of diseases and conditions with embryonic stem cell research is a political issue.

I have never met, therefore I do not know Doug Forrester. I am sure he is a good man, but he does not support the public funding of embryonic stem cell research, which at this time still gives us the best hope of a cure for central nervous system diseases and spinal cord injuries. Public funding will make the research move faster, therefore finding cures sooner.

A person in my condition is very aware of every thing that is going on throughout the world that can possibly cure spinal cord injuries. Just like most people who are afflicted by a disease such as diabetes, cancer etc. We become well read on our particular medical problem. It would be hard pressed for any lay person to know more about spinal cord injuries, and what is going on in the world as far as research goes, for a cure, then me.

A few months ago Doug Forrester's office called my mother to ask her if she was interested in meeting with Doug Forrester's campaign to discuss Stem cell research. She said she would be happy to and if Forrester's office would name the place and time she would be there. My mother never heard back. I can assure you I am well aware of Mr. Forrester's stance on stem cells as well as embryonic stem cell research.

With all that I have just said I hope it is clear that not only was I not taken advantage of by being in the commercial supporting embryonic stem cell research, and Senator Corzine's campaign for Governor, but that my presence and words were well thought out and understood.

I hope when Carl is cured he can give a more thorough, in person response to Forrester.

Great Ad! (none / 0)

I am so happy that Corzine is capitalizing on this issue because it will make a difference.  I attended a Stem Cell Research forum last month in Montclair, NJ and Jonathan Alter was one of the speakers.   The forum was sponsored by a political group which my sister belongs too and does their website www.bluewavenj.org.    Jonathan Alter made it very clear that this issue would be extremely pivotal in this campaign so I am glad to see this ad.  He calls it a "Pro-Cure" issue.  My sister's group is also trying to sponsor an ad to support Corzine and you can go on their site to see it.  It hasn't come out yet because they are still trying to get funding for it, so anyone who wishes to help get their ad out please go to their site!

Republican response (none / 0)

I can totally see the Republican response:

"Quadraplegic? He's moving his arms in the ad! He's a liar! And he probably supports The Terrorists!"

Lies like a rug (none / 0)

Forrester, like most Republican candidates, lies naturally.  And then calls the other side a liar.  I, for one, am sick of this continued garbage coinciding with their theft of the alleged moral high ground.

All Republicans in this state know how to do is slander Democrats and cut taxes for the rich.  Oh yeah, they screw up the running of government ,too, because they view it as one large schem to funnell contracts, jobs, and money to their friends and supporters.

Why would NJN air (for free) his distortion?  Why do all the networks air, for free, the DeLay attacks on Ronnie Earl?  SCLM my a**.

Forrester is an ass (none / 0)

And so is Jerry Kilgore. Hopefully Corzine has it all wraped up.

I have a feeling this ad could backfire... (none / 0)

Now doubt the overall message of the ad will resonate with voters, but I still believe this could backfire similar to Kilgores 'Hitler ad'.  Its already comming under fire in the press.

Re: I have a feeling this ad could backfire... (none / 0)

That story came out before Carl Riccio came out with his follow-up statement. David Rebovich is a clueless hack, so it's no surprise that he'd say that. He sees something 'controversial' and reflexively says 'backfire'. His "use a young person in a wheelchair" comment is total BS. Carl is a smart adult who wanted to weigh in on a topic important to him. Rebovich makes it sound like he's a little kid Corzine propped up in front of the cameras. Quite frankly, it's insulting to Carl to suggest that.

I also have to disagree with your comparison to Kilgore's 'Hitler' ad. There are certainly some similarities, which Kos pointed out, but saying that Forrester doesn't support state funding of stem cell research is a straight fact. Saying that Tim Kaine wouldn't impose the death penalty on Hitler is a hypothetical non sequitur meant to instill fear.

I think Corzine is making a mistake (none / 0)

His running ads emphasizing he is for stem cell research and roe v wade will alienate Catholics and Hispanics which make up a large section of NJ.

Re: I think Corzine is making a mistake (none / 0)

Here's the polling on the issue as of March:

By a wide margin of 61-31 percent, New Jersey registered voters back a statewide bond initiative to raise $250 million for stem cell research, according to a new Hart Research survey conducted for Results For America (RFA), which is a project of the nonprofit and nonpartisan Civil Society Institute. Over four out of five (83 percent) state residents said that they think voters should decide the question of state funding for stem cell research, compared to only about one in 10 (11 percent) preferring to have state lawmakers handle the question.

Even on an unaided basis, the healthy level of support for the ballot measure includes Catholics (57 percent), independents (65 percent), Democrats (73 percent) and Republicans (40 percent). Overall support for embryonic stem cell research on an unaided basis stood at a strong 68-24 percent, including comfortable majorities of Catholics (60 percent), independents (73 percent), Democrats (77 percent), and a plurality of Republicans (with 50 percent in favor and 41 percent opposed).

Speaking personally, I'm an Irish Catholic married into an Italian Catholic family. I don't know anyone -- Catholic or otherwise -- who is opposed to embryonic stem cell research.

Roe v. Wade may be a different story, but I doubt it. A large majority of the Catholics I know, even the ones personally opposed to abortion, are pro-choice and believe the issue is a personal one. And I'm including a large number of Republicans in that mix.

Besides, if Corzine is making a mistake by running as strongly pro-stem cell research and strongly pro-choice, why is Forrester also loudly claiming to be for both of those things as well?

Wow.

Don't cave in to fear.  Stand up and fight.  And fighting sometimes means throwing a punch to the jaw, like this.

Fight, or the Republicans will continue to treat us like pushovers.

The Ad (none / 0)

I think it is an ad that will make many people look favorably at Corzine.  Many of us know of someone like Carl or have someone in our family who has similar obstacles.   Research in the area of stem cells could help the Carls, the Arlen Specters, and people with different ailments.  As a woman, and a mother, I approve of the ad.

What an idiot! (none / 0)

The ad sounds terrific, alright, but what a gift Forrester gave Corzine when he decided to shoot his mouth off without thinking it through!

Forrester's "exploitation" angle seems to be based on some ignorant assumption that quadraplegics were mentally deficient or something.  Then Carl's articulate response just blows Forrester out of the water.  No amount of  money can buy that kind of political damage.

Forrester, you just punk'd yourself.  You're toast.
