Report from DNC Caucus (Pt. 1)

I attended the DNC's forum today in New York City at the Roosevelt Hotel, right near Grand Central Terminal. I arrived at 9:45 a.m. Earlier at the hotel there had been breakfasts for DNC members and other registered attendees. I passed through the gauntlet of attendees, staffers, and guests crowded around literature tables set up by the campaigns for the various chair and vice-chair candidates.

Once near the doors to the main forum room, I met up with the Driving Votes (DV) crew. They had commitments from nearly 100 people to be at this event, and they got a tremendous turnout. Elena Morin and the entire DV team did a fantastic job coordinating DV's presence at the forum. Kudos to Elena (and the whole team, including Colleen) of Driving Votes NY, and to DV's Executive Director, Leighton Akio Woodhouse. Elena and Leighton were very helpful to me, and I'm grateful.

While awaiting instructions, I saw Assemblymember "Denny" Ferrall come in, a DNC member and chair of the New York State Democratic Committee, as well as other note-worthies including Alan Hevesi, the New York State Comptroller, Mark Green, a candidate for NY Attorney General, Harold Ickes, Rev. Al Sharpton, and others.

I also spotted New York State Assemblymember, Jonathan Bing, who I supported early and enthusiastically when he ran for his Upper East Side seat. We spoke briefly, and he told me that despite the DNC event being in his own district--in fact, four blocks from his apartment--he had not received an invitation, and had to pull strings to get in.

As Jonathan moved on to take his seat, I discovered that the submitted and approved list of expected DV guests could not be found by event staff.

So far, the signs were not good that this event was going to be truly open and accessible. After all, if Assemblymember Bing was having a hard time, what chance did "just" rank and file Democrats have? A supervising staffer, Jody, requested that each DV guest show photo ID and enter their information on a sign-in sheet. Citing fire regulations, she said she would let guests in as room allowed. Fortunately, this proved to be the final hurdle. I was in the first group of 10 to be admitted, and from my vantage in the balcony it seems that pretty much everyone who wanted in was admitted. I certainly hope so, since throughout the entire forum there were never fewer than 30 to 40 or more unclaimed seats reserved for registered attendees--mostly DNC members, I assume--who clearly did not bother to show up.

Tomorrow I will post Part 2 of my report, which will be the substantive dispatch, summarizing the comments of the seven candidates (all men, by the way) vying to chair the DNC. I hope you'll come back to MyDD to read that report. You'll discover what ideas the candidates have, and also learn:

  1. Which candidates got the best crowd reactions;
  2. Which candidate mentioned the "blogosphere;"
  3. Which candidate rose on a point of personal privilege to defend a member of his family;
  4. Which candidate complained of being a victim of "opposition research" done not by Republicans, but Democrats;
  5. Which candidate got hissed, and
  6. My own reactions to the forum and candidates.

Tomorrow? (none / 0)

Where's your commitment? Where's your journalistic drive to be first? Where's your thirst for power? Where's my patience?

Re: Tomorrow? (none / 0)

LOL :D

I have a house guest to entertain this weekend; otherwise I'd have "diaried" this sucker in one "swell foop" this afternoon!

There...now I've posted something using real quotation marks, so my journalistic credentials will now surely be unassailable! :)

I attended the caucus today too (none / 0)

I came from Philadelphia ( 2 hours or so) expecting
to have no problems .I met my sister who lives in the city. I also contacted driving votes. My 14 year old was a last minute addition and I was told ahead of time it was unlikely she would get in.While we were waiting to see if we would get in my sister who was waiting in line at the main table,"accidently" brushed 3 caucus members passes on the floor. We put them around our neck and in we went.

We were on the floor right next to the press table
and behind 4 voting members. I'm for Dean but after today I actually think that all candidates (well maybe not Tim Roemer)have something to bring to the table. I had never heard of David Leland before but I was really impressed with what he had to say about his management style( he used sports analogies I think but got the gist ) and the people sitting in front of us who were really caucus people kept using the word strong in referring to Leland.
After it was over my sister actaully went up to Rosenberg and asked him if any one had actaully thought about splitting up the postion and he said this was something other people had suggested.

More later..
