DNC Chair Cattle Call: Atlanta Southern Caucus Edition

It sounds like the Southerners in Atlanta over the past weekend set the bar for a Democratic Party regional caucuses for the DNC Chair-- open to the Democratic Party members. The Midwestern is up next, so bloggers, get your credentials (everyone else, just show up at the door):
January 15
Midwest Regional Caucus
St. Louis Airport Marriott
10700 Peartree Lane
St. Louis, Missouri
Contact: Corey Dillon, Missouri Democratic Party
573-230-4294 or cdillon@missouridems.org
Now to Atlanta. If you missed the blogging done over the weekend, go read through the blogposts on Burnt Orange Report, Scrutiny Hooligans, BFD (whom also has some Dean photos), and michael in chicago, who blogged the CSPAN coverage here on MyDD. Here's the roundup:

Double whammy. Lobbyist Jim Blanchard and Alamo Molly Beth Malcolm are gone. But really, they were both DOA to begin with, and for that matter, so is Make Ohio Red David Leeland. Makes it a triple, we are down to the final six (for now).

Howard Dean is a candidate for the DNC Chair, and as Chair, he will not be running for President in 2008. Off-topic, Dean's got an op-ed, Keep The Election On Track, about Iraq. On topic, Puerto Rico is on board. If you want to read a Republican's slant on the DNC Chair race, Eric Pfeiffer has written Scream 2 on NRO, but seriously, Dean as "a potentially unstable emotional leader", that's FreeRepublic crap. Maybe tomorrow starting at 1 pm, BFA will start to be used as outreach for Dean's candidacy. The semi-entrance of pro-choice activist Kate Michelman sure positions Dean in the middle, outside the brewing war developing...

...with the candidacy of Tim Roemer. He says he's a candidate, and among the DNC Members in Atlanta, he came off well, but that's the South. In places like Massachusetts, where the Democratic State Chairman came out vocally against Roemer today, he's not going to fly. However, his candidacy does has the opportunity of creating an ideological divide over abortion rights within the Democratic Party. And so we wind up with 40 newspaper stories nationwide Tuesday with the headline, Mass. Dem opposes anti-abortion chairman. Way to go Harry & Nancy.

For Martin Frost, the more that Tim Roemer emerges, the lesser his chances become. As one DNC Member told me, I kept hearing that Martin Frost has support, but I don't see it. Frost and Roemer are sipping from the same cup, and only one of them may emerge as the anti-Dean.

The chances for Simon Rosenberg lessen as the race becomes more high-profile oriented, and less about strategy. For those who are looking for a master campaign mechanic for a DNC Chair, Simon's is on: "The Internet has enabled us to have a more intimate, direct relationship with people than ever before," he said. "I want those people to be partners, not just donors. I don't want the DNC to be just a building - I want it to be a community of millions of people." And this: "The Republicans have built a superior political machine, an information-age Tammany Hall... We are behind the Republicans, in terms of executing the modern technologies and communicating with people's real concerns." Big Netroots fanclub stuff.

Wellington Webb just doesn't generate a lot of news, though he does show up in the top three choices of a lot of DNC Members. But Colorado's race for State Chair on March 5th is going to be interesting. It's the first "accountability" election following the DNC Chair vote on Feb 12th:

An insurgent candidate disenchanted with the status quo is jockeying to take control of the party statewide. Colorado Democratic first vice chairwoman Julia Hicks is seeking to replace Chris Gates as state Democratic Party chair. "We need a leader who includes people in the party, not divides it," Hicks said.
Bad luck for Donnie Fowler to get dragged into the Clinon mess by his just-announced Midwest finance director David Rosen. Nothing to do with him though, Donnie just got caught in the crossfire of Bush's DOJ going after Hillary Clinton. Roff has good things to say about Fowler, but the traction he needed out of Atlanta was reportedly not happening.

Use our money power (none / 0)

Flood Reid and Pelosi's office with messages about how much you did and how much MONEY you donated in the last election cycle.  Tell them how you will sit on your  hands and close your wallet if they keep supporting Tim Roemer.

I started Dem politics as a member of a a DNC fundraising group, and I will write no checks and work no campaigns for the DNC if Roemer is chair.

He is a gross miscalculation on their part.  He infuriates me.  Selecting him is like waving the white flag of surrender.

Anyone who really cares about this party has to do anything they can to fight him.

Did Chris or Jerome post the DNC members and their addresses and phone numbers?

Please post again.

Rosenberg & Dean (none / 0)

I'd really like the party to create a Chair and President position and stick Dean in the Chair and make Rosenberg the operational manager.  Dean has much higher name recognition, but Rosenberg seems to have the better organizing skills.  We need both.

Roehmer would destroy the party.  He's not on board with SSN, he didn't make the gutsy call on the deficit, and he's on the other side on social issues.  I wouldn't give a dime if he becomes chair, and I think that's common.  It would be as much a bleep you to the party activists as I can think of.

Roemer versus Frost (none / 0)

I saw the conference on CSPAN this weekend.  I didn't know much about Donnie Fowler, but, man, is he a bad speaker.
I really admire Martin Frost.  He's a good, honest man.  I said a few prayers that he'd somehow overcome the bad odds in his new district and was disappointed on election night.  He put up a great fight.
Tim Roemer?  Didn't he abandon his Congressional seat because the district was about to be redrawn?  This is the person we're going to have lead the party?  No way.  If it's gonna be an ex-Congressman, I'd prefer the one who stands and fights.
But I'm for Dean.  Once again, he's setting the agenda.  Grassroots activism, decentralization of DNC power and money, empowering local and state Democratic organizations and a 50-state effort.  Rosenberg is saying the same thing and very well.  He's clearly a very intelligent man and seems to be a helluva good manager.

Dean "a ... unstable ... leader" (none / 0)

Projection, pure and simple.

No one wants to probe President Flat Affect's psyche, lest the 25th Amendment rear its ugly head..

The GOP remains afraid of the man.

And well they should be.

Anyone know when the Eastern/Northeastern regional meeting is? Or did I already miss it? And if I missed it, please pretend like I never asked this question.

Eastern Caucus a "private event" (none / 0)

That's according to the NY State Dems, who I called this morning for infomation on the event. When I asked for details regarding admission, I was told that the caucus was for DNC members only and it was a private event. The tone in which I was told was, "Duh....you really should have known that."

So, I guess New York didn't get the message from Atlanta...if you'd like to weigh in, call the phone number above.

Re: Eastern Caucus a "private event" (none / 0)

I was told that the caucus was for DNC members only and it was a private event.

Point of clarification: Doesn't this run counter to the DNC bylaws?  Don't all DNC and related meetings have to be open to the public? Or is there a detail missing?

Re: Eastern Caucus a "private event" (none / 0)

This is what it says:

The forums are open to the press and credentials will be made available through the regional contacts.

I'm going to see if I can get credentialed via the DailyKos (with Markos' approval), or else the Swing State Project.

Re: Eastern Caucus a "private event" (none / 0)

I know that's what it says but it runs counter to this in the Charter of the Democratic Party:

Article 9, Section 12. All meetings of the Democratic National Committee, the Executive Committee, and all other official Party committees, commissions and bodies shall be open to the public, and votes shall not be taken by secret ballot.

Like he said (none / 0)

I was at the Southern Caucus and surrounding events and heard the candidates make their pitches a couple of different times.  By Saturday night, I couldn't believe how many times the other candidates refered to, hijacked, or otherwise passed off many of Dean's suggestions as their own.  It was really incredible.  I asked Dean's team if if drove them crazy and they said no.  They believe everytime somebody says "like Howard suggested" it legitimizes Dean and gets people off the perception that he's out of the mainstream.

"We chose as our House and Senate leaders (and thus the public face of the party) Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid -- two honorable, decent people who nevertheless have done little to inspire confidence that they could successfully fight a parking ticket, let alone the war against terrorism."
