Conservatives Hate Firefighters

In a post entitled Morning Reads, today the Official Bush-Cheney Campaign blog quoted from an article by police officer Jack Dunphy that originally appeared in the National Review Online. Here are some goodies from the article:
Generally speaking, the likelihood that a firefighter will vote for John Kerry is inversely proportional to the number of fires he has actually fought. Witness all those T-shirted "Fire Fighters for Kerry" you saw at the convention. A little soft around the middle some of them were, weren't they? Do you think some of them could haul a hose pack up 50 flights of stairs? I'm not betting on it. I'm guessing the only fires many of them have seen lately were at IAFF barbecues.
There is nothing quite like insulting a group of people and then acting baffled that the group supports your opponent. Apparently, Republicans were unhappy to just do this with African-Americans, people from the northeast, the GLBT community, people with advanced degrees, the non-religious and Muslim-Americans, they decided it was time to insult and dismiss firefighters as a group as well.

Fire fighters have been the number one supporters behind John Kerry's campaign from well before Iowa. Without them, Kerry would probably have dropped out on February 3 after Edwards won Iowa and Dean won New Hampshire. Insulting first responders for playing a key role--if not the key role--in electing the next President can only serve to drive them further into the Democratic camp during future elections.

I don't know how effective this will be for the Republicans.  They seem to believe people can be bombed into democracy, so why not insulted into Republicanism.

I think you have (none / 0)

your facts wrong. Kerry won Iowa and New Hampshire.

I think he means (none / 0)

Kerry wouldn've lost those states without the firefighters' votes.

More "fat" evildoers here (5.00 / 0)

So the neo-cons are attacking "fat" guys as incapable of fighting fires, huh?

Here's a nice picture of some "fat" guys just like the firefighters in the picture in question. This is the offensive line for the US Naval Academy. These "fat" guys go to class and excel academically, take naval science classes and drills, like learning all the firefighting techniques that all Naval personnel have to know, and play football pretty well, too. Navy was 8-5 in their Div. I football schedule last year.

After 4 years at Navy, they go on to be the future leaders of the US Navy.

Yeah... these "fat" guys are terrible for America.

Looks like the defensive line to me.

P.S. They are big and fit, not fat.

First Responders (none / 0)

I imagine that this tactic will get them a lovely reception in New York at the end of the month.  Somebody needs to make sure that a copy of that piece gets to the president of the NYC union local.

There is a difference... (none / 0)

John Kerry recognizes the efforts of first responders.

George Bush recognizers the efforst of worst repsonses.

One is about the people, the other is about the policy and a failure to fund it.

The firefighters at the DNC (none / 0)

were squishy in the middle because they were retired or injured from a lifetime of rushing into burning buildings, maybe?

And even after such a comment, I'd bet those same firefighters would still spit on Dunphy if his hair were on fire.

Again, more ad hominem attacks -- (none / 0)

"They're fat! Kerry looks French!"

Never mind that their opinions are valid and based on facts, they find it easier to attack the person than their convictions or assertions.

What kills me.... (none / 0)

is that the "Morning Read" tidbit is supposed to be an example of how First Responders SUPPORT Bush/Cheney - and they're quoting an article with this kind of an INSULT in it.  Just more brilliance from the Incompetent Duo...

Re: Conservatives Hate Firefighters (none / 0)

You misread the article.  He was saying that the firefighters that support Kerry are the ones running the union (more likely Democratic), and that the union exec's (the guys who are thick around the middle) don't accurately reflect the values of the firefighters who are actually fighting fires.  He wasn't saying that firefighters are fat.

I can't wait to hear Bob Novack make that defense on Crossfire when this story goes national.

Re: Conservatives Hate Firefighters (none / 0)

Well, my reading of it was that any firefighter who supports Kerry isn't really a firefighter.  That's insulting.

The Real Deal (none / 0)

While we build Firestations in Baghdad, we are closing them all over the country.  These men and women need our support and our thanks for the job that they do.  Whether they be members of the Professional or Volunteer ranks, the fires are just as hot in rurual america as they are in the big city.  Remember when folks like Dubya and his gang of Halliburton/Enron executives are running away from the crisis/tragedy, it is these men and women, - regardless of their size - are heading into harms way.

The Homeland Security Dept. is a sham.  Give this money to states and local authorities, and let them use it to fortify the first line of defense.  The local Volunteer Squads, Departments and Agencies......

Re: Conservatives Hate Firefighters (none / 0)

Jack Dunphy is National Review Online's honest to goodness cop on the street.  He wears a badge, arrests people, puts his life on the line.  If you would actually read the article "First Responders for Kerry? Don't Bet On it." you would know that he is contrasting the folks who wear turn-out coats, put out fires and put their lives on the line to the soft around the middle, democratic party functionaries who seem to dominate the upper level of all police and fire fighter unions.

Ol' Jack has a lot more standing to comment than people who spend their day typing.

Re: Conservatives Hate Firefighters (none / 0)

Good one. In defending the article you make the same claim it did--firefighers who support Kerry are fat and lazy. Thanks for proving the point yet again.

Hmm. . .
"soft around the middle, democratic party functionaries"
equals
"firefighers who support Kerry are fat and lazy"

There are so many mischaracterizations available, I guess this one will have to do.

Dunphy (none / 0)

Dunphy apparently doesn't even use his real name.  Nothing like talking down people and then not even being around to take the heat.

Jerk.

the whole article (none / 0)

is filled with a bunch of crap.   He hits most of the GOP talking points at some point.   He even starts ripping on Teresa Heinz Kerry at the end.

And he only presents anectdotal evidence as support for his point.    It's a load of junk.

Coservatives Hate Firefighter's? (none / 0)

I am conservative on a fair amount of issues and I am a professional firefighter and a member of the IAFF.. I can't really believe that I hate myself.  I think the article was poorly written and in bad taste, but the title is accurate.  My union did not poll any members of my local before giving Kerry our endorsement.  Most members of my local are not for Kerry and resent their dues going to support his campaign.  Some locals may support Kerry, while others do not.  So it is misleading to state that firefighters support Kerry.  It would be more correct to state that the IAFF supports Kerry.
The issue of the IAFF supporting Kerry over Bush has less to do with Bush or Kerry's support of FF/First Responders and more to do with supporting unions in general.  Don't kid yourself!  Most unions believe democratic candidates will favor unions and thus support them out of self-preservation. Bush has done more for first responders than Clinton ever did and I believe that Kerry would probably support FFs just as well as Bush.
