GOP Invocation: Those Who Do Not Oppose Gay Marriage Are Nazis

I suppose comparing homosexuals to turtles wasn't enough for the GOP. Now anyone who does not oppose gay marriage is a Nazi. Via Atrios, here is what Sheri Dew, who will give the opening invocation at the Republican National Convention, said on February 28, 2004 about those who do not oppose gay marriage:
Lining Up With Hitler or Against Him

This escalating situation reminds me of a statement of a World War II journalist by the name of Dorothy Thompson who wrote for the Saturday Evening Post in Europe during the pre-World War II years when Hitler was building up his armies and starting to take ground. In an address she delivered in Toronto in 1941 she said this: "Before this epic is over, every living human being will have chosen. Every living human being will have lined up with Hitler or against him. Every living human being either will have opposed this onslaught or supported it, for if he tries to make no choice that in itself will be a choice. If he takes no side, he is on Hitler's side. If he does not act, that is an act--for Hitler."

May I take the liberty of reading this statement again and changing just a few words, applying it to what I fear we face today? "Before this era is over, every living human being will have chosen. Every living human being will have lined up in support of the family or against it. Every living human being will have either opposed the onslaught against the family or supported it, for if he tries to make no choice that in itself will be a choice. If we do not act in behalf of the family, that is itself an act of opposition to the family."

At first it may seem a bit extreme to imply a comparison between the atrocities of Hitler and what is happening in terms of contemporary threats against the family--but maybe not. I just turned 50 years old, and I have never married. That was not my intention, and it has not been my choice. When someone asks me why I have never married, the simple and truthful answer is that nobody has ever asked me.

This is not a comparison made in passing. First, she makes it, then openly reflects on it, and then affirms it. I guess this is what Republicans mean by putting out a "positive message" in the face of Democratic anger.

The Log Cabin Republicans should hold a free screening of Bent and send an invite to Ms. Dew.

Republicans have a choice - Vote Badnarik (none / 0)

True conservatives (even Cheney) know that this onslaught is simple fascism.  True conservatives do not have to choose between a liberal or a fascist - they can vote for Michael Badnarik and send a message that fascist neocons have no place in this country.

Re: Republicans have a choice - Vote Badnarik (none / 0)

I would LOVE for Badnarik to out poll Nader this time around.  I think that would marginize him for good.

My personal philosphy is what I call Democratic Libertarian-I believe the government should provide a safety net (this includes nationalized medicine), as well as obvious things like roads and schools and fire fighters and police officers and an army big enough to defend the country from foreign invaders (the current army is about five times too large), and to charge taxes large enough to pay for all that.  I, however, think the government should stay out of everything else.  Basically, the government should not prevent people from doing anything that doesn't harm others.  So I am pro-legalization of gambling, most drugs, prostitution.  I am pro-trade, but I am also pro-fair trade-our government has pollution rules, minimum wage laws, etc.  Other countries don't.  Also other countries frequently don't let our products in on a fair playing field.  I think government should have no say in terms of marriage, gay or straight.  I hate the theorcracy that the Neocons want, and I hate thier warmongering ways.

...weren't the GOP's yelling about Moveon's Hilter ad (which was not an official ad anyways-it was user submitted)?  What hypocrites!

Hilter comparions (none / 0)

Since gays were condemned by Hilter (have people
forgotten about the pink triangles?) she seems
to be inviting someone to point out the historical
fact that Hilter's policies (at least wrt gays)
were most closely aligned with todays Republican
Party!

Add to that the fact that part of Hitler's embrace
of Christianity was to require the Lord's prayer
by schoolchildren (concentration camps for Jews,
gays, and other "deviants" was another part of that expression of Christianity).  Add to that the
clear embrace of Hilter for big business.  Add
to that Hilter's strangely familiar rejection of
scientific opinion when it conflicted with his
ideology. Etc. Etc.

Not a set of comparisons I'd bring up if I were
a Republican.

big tent (none / 0)

It really is a big tent.  "See, both me and God hate you, but to show you how big hearted and understanding we are we're gonna offer you a chance to join us in hating you."
