Jim Newberry and the Open Campaign

No one is as smart as everyone. And yet, campaigns are top down in their organization, in their message. They push out words and images, and hope it has the right effect. This creates an alieantion of the outside from the inside. This is why this campaign is going to be different. I am working for Jim Newberry because I feel that this is a chance to harness the energy we have all felt on the internet - and in our communities - but haven't seen translated into action.

So what does this mean?

It means taking ideas from people - big ones and small ones. The text on the myDD.com add that is running now, came from a supporter - and was vetted first by other supporters. The targetting and focus of the message was tested first on the internnet.

But it goes farther than that - the campaign is binding its various parts together by using new technologies and new ideas, and taking the best of what everyone is doing. The job of the campaign is to pull ideas in, and turn them into a unified message. It's Jim that is running for office, make no mistake about it, and he decides what the campaign is going to do. But, instead of trying to impose from the top down, he is trying to pull in from the center out.

Because the job of a representative is to listen, and then to act on behalf of others, to take the fight forward, and do the people's business. This means that the relationship isn't from above, and the campaign can't have that attitude.

Is it a long road? Yes. Is it a slam dunk? No, otherwise it would not be new. Will we make mistakes? I am sure we already have. But that is the very power of this: we have a growing sphere of people who want this campaign to work, who will tell us when and where we fall short of the mark, who will offer, not just envelop stuffing, but the best of their ability and ideas.

Because, together, we can do this. We are doing it. Help us take the fight to the top. And look for campaign threads, so that we can hear what needs to be done.

Because we can only do this, if the "We" includes YOU.
