He took Al Gore's decades of Congressional work on Internet development and turned it into a false spin that the media swallowed whole. This spin stuck even after the father of the Internet, Vint Cerf, explained just how critical Gore's role was and that the actual statement (not the misquoted smear) was entirely true.
