Don't forget that John Stauber hails from Madison, although apparently living on the west side (the fucking sellout ;). I share those roots and many here do. He is a little late to the party, being a Nader supporter in 2000, but then very publicly moving to Kerry in 2004.
It is hard for some of us to come over to the Dems, speaking as a "premature anti-fascist" myself having lined up with MoveOn in 1998 and the left blogosphere from the beginning. 2000 was the first time I ever put up a yard sign for a presidential candidate, for Gore, and almost came to blows with a neighbor over his Bore / Gush sign.
It is happening though. It broke my heart in 2000 seeing my east side neighborhood going 35% for Nader and I told many ex-friends to go fuck themselves. Back now though, and John is behind the curve. My ward cast eighteen votes for pig Nader in 2004.
I like and respect Stauber, and he has earned the right to say what he did. I think though that his arguments are more a reflection of the strategic landscape as it existed when he came of age as opposed to the one we're now facing. He's also going after a valuable ally in a way that I think is unfair.
