Roemer, and Frost too I felt, leaned on the whole terrorism/keep America safe thing pretty heavily, and it bugged me. How is the DNC Chair going to play a role in keeping America safe? Isn't that the Republican's frame, anyway? All the pre-election terror alerts, and the GOP 9/11 convention hype.
As a New Yorker who, I confess, spent a lot of time looking up nervously in the year after Sept. 11, I still despise making this THE most prominent national issue. And anyway, keeping us safe is not about hollering and being belligerant, it's about investing in our domestic infrastructure (e.g., port security, first responders, health systems) and charting a wise, non-imperialist foreign policy course--none of which these two fire-breathers mentioned.
