BMW Joins Other Automakers On Trump’s “Tax” List

The Twitterer-in-Chief is at it again! Not content to rile up most of the known world by attacking an icon of the civil rights movement, Donald Trump has ordered BMW to build its new factory in the U.S. because it will be “much better” for the automaker. Trump has already reamed Ford; Toyota, and General Motors for their Mexican plans. We all know every Trump Car is not necessarily american made.

Sunday’s edition of the German newspaper Bild und Zeitung quoted Trump as threatening to impose a 35 percent “border tax”  (tariff) unless it dropped its plans to build a plant at San Luis Potosi, Mexico. The almost-president (his Inauguration is Friday) claimed that the 3-Series cars the plant will produce would be aimed at the U.S. market.

Trump’s claim was countered by a company spokesman who said that the plant – construction is underway —  was going to join two others already making 3-Series cars located in Germany and China when it came online in 2019. The spokesman also reminded Trump that BMW employs, either directly or indirectly, 70,000 in the United States.

That didn’t stop Trump from weighing in again, very cluelessly, on cars.  While praising German carmaking,   he not-so-subtly hinted that Americans buy too many German vehicles like Mercedes-Benz’s saying because he sees them around New York City (where he has his home). He lashed out at Germans who don’t buy as many Chevys at the same rate as they buy BMWs and others, calling it “unfair” and very one-sided.
