Former Senator Ted Stevens Killed in a Plane Crash

Former Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican senator in US history who lost his seat after a corruption conviction that was later dismissed, has been killed in a plane crash. The plane carrying nine passengers crashed 17 miles north of Dillingham, Alaska occurred late Monday night. Dillingham is located in northern Bristol Bay, about 325 miles southwest of Anchorage. The identities and conditions of the other 8 passengers on board have not been released or confirmed.

Stevens was first appointed to the Senate in 1968. He was 86 years old.
