MyDD5 update & back

beta testing live?  Yea, its still somewhat in progress of working out all of the features, at the same time that we get bugs squashed. But, its been 5 weeks from the date of the launch, and things have moved in the right direction. We are working on some of the comment features right now, so those may go through some hiccups in the process.

I am waiting for the spell-check in the editor....

You'll be seeing more changes here, as I am hoping that we get the beta thingy 'finished' by the end of March-- and I think we will... let us know in the comments of any compliments (yea right) or disparaging remarks in the comments.

Oh, I don't know why I didn't just tell them when they called me in Cocles beach just south of Puerto Viego in Costa Rica on Thursday, that my flight was canceled... 'OK, we'll just spend another week on the Caribbean beach' instead of going through the travel detours (which were still fun) of three days waiting to get into DC.

looking forward to the return of Breaking Blue

I see lots of links I'd like to bring to people's attention, but I rarely have time to write a full post about them.

RE: looking forward to the return of Breaking Blue

Yea, that went down on the special election night, and needs some changes. Now that I am back, that's about 3rd on the list here. It needs to be integrated more tightly with Twitter to work properly for uers.

new glitch I've noticed

I can't seem to get the "front page add" button to work during the preview phase, before I post something. I can post it as a recent diary and then click "front page add," but then it stays in the recent diary list as well as going on the front page.

browser incompatibilities

Biggest concern:

MyDD currently doesn't work well (or even at all) in older versions of some browsers, for example in IE version 6, the text in the main (center) column is chopped off by the left column.  Websites can't expect users to all have the newest version of browsers; and if they do expect that - putting the burden on the users rather than the programmers - then site traffic will definitely suffer for it. It's not a coincidence that the most popular websites work well across a broad range of older and newer browsers.

Smaller concerns:

- The center column is wider than it needs to be. Currently users have to expand the browser to full screen in order to read all the text in MyDD's right column. Many users (including me!) like to use apps in windows that don't take up quite the whole screen.  Take a look at DailyKos for example - you can still view all the text even if you don't expand the browser to the whole screen.  This could be handled easily - in the top menu, just chop out some of the unused space to the left of the word "Home" and to the right of the phrase "Live Feed".

- Last time I tried to write a diary with images, I gave up; never could get them to work.  Maybe that feature is fixed now, or there is some non-obvious trick to get it to work; I haven't tried it since a couple weeks ago.

- Minor aesthetic issue: In the right column, the first diary title has no decoration, but the rest are all italicized. (Missing end-italics tag after the first comment counter line?)

Welcome back

On the plus side, I like the Twitter functionality.

Kyle is also great. He's been very helpful in addressing issues.

Nonetheless, I have to say that MyDD4 was easier to use and a cleaner look. But I'll share those thoughts via email.

Glad to hear you enjoy CR.
