Only In The Politico

Could this headline not be a joke:

Could big money haul hurt Reid?

LAS VEGAS - Sen. Harry Reid has made no secret of his plans to shore up a massive war chest to scare off challengers and aid his reelection bid.

But could Reid's boasting that he will raise $25 million to keep his seat actually hurt him?

Washington Republicans have criticized the majority leader for his glitzy Las Vegas fundraiser Tuesday night, where donors could pay $29,600 to have their picture taken with President Obama, but Nevada Republicans could go after Reid's push to kick off the most expensive race in the state's history during a recession.

"It will hurt him if he keeps talking about raising that kind of money when we have record unemployment and a record budget deficit," said Sue Lowden, chairwoman of the Nevada Republican Party. "The thought of someone saying they have to raise $25 million to win is astonishing."

Yet a Senate Republican strategist said the GOP plans to match Reid by raising upwards of $20 million to win his seat in a state with just two media markets.

To be fair, the state Republican chair said it could hurt Reid! Ignore the fact that Republicans boast of raising nearly the same amount to mount a challenge. I know Republicans want to bluff that Reid's vulnerable - but I didn't expect the chutzpah of specifically using a metric of electoral viability as proof.

In such a universe, Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons deserves credit as an "outsider" because he got kicked out of the Governor's mansion by his wife.

Re: Only In The Politico

I'm very concerned that it's probably good news for John McCain, too.

Relax

Arch Conservative Billionaire Sheldon Adelson will certainly find some rabid wingnut to run against Reid.  He will happily invest many millions to try to put lipstick on that particular pig.

Harry's lousy poll numbers just encourages Sheldon to keep adding to that pile of money.  It also keeps Harry searching for mo' money, from his er... 'friends' lobbyists.

The Qualifications though will have to be that Sheldon's candidate is dumber than Gov. Jim Gibbons.  It seems that every Republican who is smarter than Gibbons has, at some time in the past, been double crossed by Jimbo and now belongs to the 'lets sink Gibbons club'. (Which means nobody good for Senate as Jimbo is the official head of the Republican State Party.)

My money is still on Harry to Win, by a comfortable margin.
