Newt Mulls 2012

Blissfully unaware of the obvious, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich on C-Span today expressed an interest in running for President in 2012 if it were to fill a vacuum.

C-SPAN: "If you were to run, what factors would you take into account? What would lead you to think about running?"

GINGRICH: "Callista and I are going to think about this in February 2011. And we are going to reach out to all of our friends around the country. And we'll decide, if there's a requirement as citizens that we run, I suspect we probably will. And if there's not a requirement, if other people have filled the vacuum, I suspect we won't."

Re: Newt Mulls 2012

Dont be so quick to dismiss the guy. Agree with his views, but he can go toe to toe with anyone on policy. He is no dummy...and if the economy is still stalled come election time and conservatives see him as the standard bearer for their cause they could propel him to the nomination....and in a rough economy the incumbant is never at an advantage...

Re: Newt Mulls 2012

He's a very good strategist ("Drill, baby drill" was his idea), but a terrible candidate.  Personality means a lot in a presidential race, and his rubs everyone the wrong way... his smug, arrogant demeanor just puts people off.  He would have a hard time getting elected outside of his home state of georgia.

Re: Newt Mulls 2012

I imagine this is a great opportunity for sarcasm, snark and black humor like Gingrich/Palin'12 where the candidates are caught having an affair on the campaign trail, but I'll refrain.

Newt, Palin, Romney, Huckabee .... love it.  I hope they all run.   Heck, Bachman should run too.

Re: Newt Mulls 2012

He will get the base to vote for him, but people will remember when he was speaker and the indies won't vote for him. Obama would win.

Re: Newt Mulls 2012

Newt looked good, but he's killed his chances with the base by not going with Hoffman.

Re: Newt Mulls 2012

No one will remember the NY-23 special election in 2012, any more than the 2008 Democratic primary came down to who supported Ned Lamont.
