Traveling in 2008

Yesterday Matthew Yglesias, following Jason Kottke, posted the list of cities he hit in 2008, an impressive list that includes Claremont, California, where I spent four very enjoyable years of my life. As this is a relatively slow news day, and a holiday at that, here's the list of cities I spent at least a night in during 2008 (with an asterisk denoting a city I had not previously visited):

  • Portland, OR
  • Bay Area, CA
  • Washington, DC
  • Escuintla, Guatemala*
  • Antigua, Guatemala*
  • Panajachel, Guatemala*
  • Cannon Beach, OR
  • New York, NY
  • Austin, TX*
  • Port Townsend, WA
  • Livingston, NJ
  • Las Vegas, NV
  • Jerusalem, Israel

Where did you go in 2008? Where are you hoping to go in 2009?

What did you think of Bogotá? First time in Colombia? I am always curious of others think of my homeland.

I travel on Business

I'm not sure I want to remember.

Mostly CA, TX, OR, CO, and SC, NC, GA, FL.
(managing the SE and the SW right now, had
to lay off my sales guys as part of downsizing..)

Now, I do WANT remember:

Milan
Savona (Genoa)
Naples
Messina (Sicily)
Alexandria
Cairo
Cyprus (Limassol)
Marmasas (Turkey)
Santorini (Greece)
Katakolon (Greece, site of the ancient Olympics)

Was in Naples election night, and the Italians were thrilled (actually, I think relived we finally came to our senses...)

Re: Traveling in 2008

very cool, thanks for reminding me to do this!

threw me for a loop for a second when I saw Panajachel and Antigua mixed with all those US cities... I've been in both this week so I thought I was getting called out.

what were you doing in Esquintla, Jonathan? heading for the coast? and did you manage to visit some places around the lake besides Panajachel (weird little town...)... what a lake tho, wow.

here's the places I slept in in 2008, all for the first time except the last one - it was a good year. locations with an exclamation denote an especially mind-blowing/intense/I'll-never-be-the-s ame-again evening.

San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas (Mexico)
Comitan, Chiapas
Juchitan, Oaxaca (Mexico) !
Huatulco, Oaxaca
Oaxaca City, Oaxaca
Porto Escondido, Oaxaca
Mazunte, Oaxaca (a.k.a. Heaven)
St. Agustinillo, Oaxaca
Cuajimaloyas, Oaxaca
San Juan Copala, Oaxaca  !
Cuatla, Morelos (Mexico)
Tepotzlan, Morelos
DF, Mexico
Tlaxcala, Mexico
Aguascalientes, Mexico
Queretaro, Mexico
Antigua, Guate
Panajachel, Guate
Nahualá, Guate  !
San Pedro la Laguna, Guate
Santa Rosa Copan, Honduras
Utila, Honduras
Guarita, Honduras !
Gracias, Honduras
Manhattan, NY

can't wait to see where 2009 leads...

Re: Traveling in 2008

In March I visited my friend's family in Guatemala, heading down to a beach town called Lindamar near San Jose in Escuintla. Really beautiful. I also hit a number of the towns around Atitlan, though I can't recall all the names right now. Also very beautiful.

Travel plans for 2009

I'ld be satisfied if I simply avoided going to Hell in 2009.  Anything else would be cherries on top.

Re: Traveling in 2008

Petra is on my list. It comes highly recommended. Also St. Catehrine's Monastery at the base of Mt. Sinai, oldest continously used monastery in the world. Forget if it's Armenian or Greek Othrodox.

Re: Traveling in 2008

Ethiopia is best in the Spring. It's a large country though and best travelled by bus. Somalia is really only accessible in the north, Puntland. Not sure if there are flights other than private or relief ones. I've been meaning to blog on Africa, especially Somalia and Zimbabwe. Just haven't gotten the chance as yet.

Ethiopia is stunning.
