GOP Convention Thread

Rudy Giuliani has taken the stage following two other also rans, Mitt Romney (whom Paul Begala said "embarrassed himself") and Mike Huckabee.

Sarah Palin is set to speak in 20 minutes.

Twittering HERE.

Update [2008-9-3 22:13:43 by Todd Beeton]:I think Rudy actually was being sincere about Barack when he said "his rise is remarkable, it's the kind of thing that can only happen in America" but the whole place cracked up. I don't get it.

Update [2008-9-3 22:13:43 by Todd Beeton]:Rudy using Hillary talking points against Barack: "on the job training,""ready for the 3AM phone call" etc. It just feels rehashed and recycled.

Update [2008-9-3 22:23:3 by Todd Beeton]:Rudy: "The Democrats gave up on Iraq and when they did that they gave up on America." That's fucked up.

Update [2008-9-3 22:23:3 by Todd Beeton]:Is it me or does Rudy's attacks on Barack Obama feel very "throw it all on the wall and see what sticks"?

Update [2008-9-3 22:42:38 by Todd Beeton]:The place is going nuts for Sarah Palin. Double the applause McCain will get tomorrow.

Update [2008-9-3 22:42:38 by Todd Beeton]:So far very sweet and likable. But no more Mr. Niceguy: "...and they're always proud of America."

Update [2008-9-3 22:44:37 by Todd Beeton]:Two references to "bitter gate." Seriously, do they have anything new?

Update [2008-9-3 22:47:49 by Todd Beeton]:This is actually a really good speech and her delivery is charming as hell. But as well as it's playing in the hall, I really wonder if it's playing outside of it.

Update [2008-9-3 23:5:45 by Todd Beeton]:Palin is certainly speaking about John McCain as though they've met for longer than 15 minutes. Man, she is a great advocate for his candidacy, best I've seen. If McCain doesn't get a bounce out of this, then he really has no hope.

Update [2008-9-3 23:12:51 by Todd Beeton]:OK, seriously, they look really odd next to each other. But, sorry Johnny Mac, this is as big an ovation as you're likely to get.

Agree with Begala

I used to think that both Romney and Huckabee were better candidates for the Republicans than McCain, but now I see that I was wrong about Romney. A Massachusetts financier bashing the East Coast elite?

Re: Agree with Begala

I realized today that McC is the best of the worst.

Fred T is really not very likable, nor is Giulliani.  Romney is an obvious panderer and real empty suit and the Huckster's charm wears thin quickly when you listen ot what he is saying and realize what a cook he is.

Re: GOP Convention Thread

Wow, who said the GOP was going to put country before political attacks? At least Obama will have something to talk about with O'Reilly.

Meanwhile, the Republicans at the convention are coming across like rowdy animals, aren't they?

I'm listening to the painful speech by ghouliani, belittling Obama's experience.

It's funny to hear Rudy tell us that we are in crisis mode one night after Fred T told us just how hunky dory everything is.

Re: GOP Convention Thread

I'm surprised Rudy attacked Obama for being a community organizer, he hates poor people even more then i thought he did.   Also, Cindy McCain keeps flashing a huge smile in response to negative attacks, which makes her look petty.

Re: GOP Convention Thread

I don't think Giuliani intended that to be an attack -- it was the crowd that mocked it, so Rudy went along with it.

Re: GOP Convention Thread

Nice to hear everyone yelling "Drill, Baby, drill!" at a convention where the (ironic) theme is country above self.

I also like how we are denying Terrorism, when we are constantly pushing real energy independence and abandoning the Iraq occupation to go fight actual terrorist.

by nintendofanboy 2008-09-03 06:18PM | 0 recs
Re: GOP Convention Thread

No, no, no, you don't solve terrorism with ideas and energy independence and dealing with all the underlying issues that lead to it. You solve it by dropping really big bombs. Preferably on Iran.

Like Todd says, throwing it all against the wall and seeing what sticks. But it's entertaining as hell and it probably won't play well against the sober, serious, cool-natured Obama we're seeing out there right now talking about issues.

Re: GOP Convention Thread

Sorry to disagree but she is hitting a triple and may keep running to go for a home run.  Anyone who thinks she is not connecting with middle americans needs to rethink what they are watching.

She is doing a really great job and this makes her critics look bad.  Just saying.

IMHO she will give Biden fits in the VP debate.  There is something to be said for being plan spoken and serious if you all dont see this you are not looking.

She wont change the election but her blue collar libertarian views could really change the GOP after McCain loses in Nov.  She represents the mountain states libertarians and not the deep south social conservatives.

It's had a few good moments. The hockey mom as pit bull with lipstick was great.

Very impressive speech

Impressive if you are already on the fundie, right-winger bus.  It is well delivered and I think she does credit to herself in the eyes of many, perhaps even journalists.

Will this lustful hate will play well to independents and moderates the GOPer ticket needs?  I would think not, except the things which make this speech such an abomination, the cheap shots, the hate, etc., are unlikely to be the featured clips in the media and the start was too late for many live viewers.

I think the media will take away the "plain spoken, fighter, hockey mom".

This is trouble. My instincts have been wrong many times and I hope this is another.

NPR leads: "Quite a speech, following another amazing speech".

Re: GOP Convention Thread

I actually liked her--as a person, not a policymaker--for the first third of the speech. Increasingly, though--especially as she attacks Obama, but also on some aspects of her own record--I think she sounds like an obnoxious jerk with little regard for the truth.

Can you believe she brought up the bridge to nowhere, when we know whe was for it before she was against it?

Did she really say Obama never authored a major piece of legislation, even in the IL State Senate? That's even more demonstrably false than Lieberman's debunked claim that Obama never crossed the aisle to get something done in the US Senate.

"There is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you." What does she think community organizers DO, anyway?

It's playing well in the hall, but when it gets factchecked and analyzed, it's going to provide a lot of fodder for her critics.

Re: GOP Convention Thread

I am so sick of Republicans playing the victim card.

Their every word repeats ad nauseum how the anti-American establishment elitists are  persecuting or disrespecting God-fearing, down-home patriots like them.

They're a pretty self-centered bunch, if you sit back and observe.

This ain't 2000 or 2004. I bet most voters today aren't interested in their fantasy-based view of the world, but want a real analysis of the problems people face today, and real solutions.

Palin's speech was 100% emotional appeal and 0% policy substance.

Obama and Biden are gonna stone-cold kick their asses.

by wolff109 2008-09-03 07:41PM | 0 recs
Re: GOP Convention Thread

Understand it isn't a "victim card".  The Republicans have a real fetish for losers and many losers have a real fetish for the GOP.

What is Bush?  Sure, he's an elitist, but among the elite he's considered a loser.

The GOP is now a reactionary -- not conservative -- party.  They react against immigrants.  They react against Islam.  They react against gays.

And they try to tie it all together by claiming they're reacting against some giant, horrible, evil librul conspiracy to do something to the average loser.

The GOP's main pitch is: "Somewhere out there right now, a person who doesn't look like you, who doesn't talk like you, who doesn't worship like you, who doesn't screw like you, who doesn't vote like you is out there having success while you toil and accomplish nothing.  This November, please vote against that person.  Because there really is no reason to vote for us.  I'm John McCain, and I approve your continued efforts to blame others for your life's failures."

It's not a victim card.  They really, really deep down think they're losers and blame others for their condition.

How voting Republicans improves that condition, I don't know.  I guess they feel better after dumping on blacks, gays, Muslims, socialists and women -- oh, wait, they luv Hillary, my bad.

It isn't organized.  It's just a primal screech.
