Did Pelosi Get Played?

The No's so far are winning the bailout vote, 226-207. They're keeping the vote open in an effort to twist people's arms. Matt Stoller suggests the House Republicans promised more votes than they actually had. Clearly Republicans want to run against this thing at home, or, perhaps more accurately, they don't want to allow their Democratic challengers to use it against them.

In the meantime, the Dow is down almost 500 points.

Consider this a bailout thread to follow the story as it continues to evolve.

Update [2008-9-29 14:5:4 by Todd Beeton]:94 Democrats voted No. Only 65 or so Republicans voted Yes. A rare show of bi-partisanship in opposition to what John Boehner reportedly called a "crap sandwich."

Update [2008-9-29 14:8:55 by Todd Beeton]:The bill has failed: 227-206 228-205.

Update [2008-9-29 14:10:24 by Todd Beeton]:MSNBC is calling this a failure of Bush and Paulson.

Trickle Down Economics Doesn't Work..

WHEN will we figure that out?

The GOP wants this bill because it covers up how much stability and job security Americans have lost for a few more months, so they can blame the INEVITABLE crisis on the Democrats without beng laughed out of town.

Better to have the ugly truth out and start working on rebuilding a SUSTAINABLE NATIONAL ECONOMY BASED ON REAL WEALTH CREATION out of the ashes.

NEITHER candidate has really addressed our core needs adequately, although McCain is particularly disgusting in the depths of his denial.

Cargo cult economics doesn't work either. We need massive investment in education so we can have good jobs in the future, and short term we need to back off of free trade somewhat so we can preserve a middle class.

We also might want to consider universal healthcare- otherwise, the middle class will be stripped of their equity by that..

Medium and low skilled workers really lose in the economy of the future.

It just doesn't need them. It wont, nothing can change that. 50 year old ex blue collar workers may want to learn new skills but the workplace will be shrinking, they dont have the energy.

Office employment is shrinking too. Jobs are getting harder and harder to find, globally.

Technology is replacing a lot of them. Far more than the good new jobs its creating.

We need to cushion the blow.

Re: Did Pelosi Get Played?

on the other hand, the two hundred or so that did vote for the bill knew exactly what they were doing?

look, i'm not here to sow bad blood.  i realize that something needs to be done, but this bill just really rubbed me the wrong way and i was glad to see everyone forced to think about this a little more before going forward.  it really feels like a case of wall street insiders taking over washington (who ever would have guessed?) and forcing action before anyone could get a handle on what was actually happening.

the part that bothers me the most, is that i'm really skeptical this will change anything at all besides totally bankrupting the u.s. treasury.

Re: Did Pelosi Get Played?

I think we more or less agree.  I'm not an economist, so I was willing to trust Krugman that this was a bad deal, but the least-bad deal that was also politically feasible.

I guess my ideal scenario would be for Congress to make people believe that they would pass something (so the markets don't completely tank), then spend a week or two putting together a package that would keep things running until next January.  Then the new administration could come up with something more long-term.

Well, it looks like I just lost most of my life savings!  Thanks, House Republicans... you screwed me again!

Fortunately, I'm still relatively young... and fortunately, my parents were risk averse, so their money is protected... how many retirees will be eating dog food this winter...

Well, I guess everyone here is happy... We'll get to relive history!  I always wondered what it was like to live in the 30's... now, we'll know!

Glad I moved my money out of Wachovia earlier this year today. I damn sure didn't want to have an account with Citibank. Oddly, local banks that have taken little risk are the safest choices right now. My bank of choice, BB&T, is actually 30% up this year.

For Democrats, this is the best outcome possible

For Americans, not so much. Worth noting that Rasmussen's latest poll showed that Americans overwhelmingly thought this was necessary. They will be pissed off.

Re: For Democrats, this is the best

I was more talking about the numbers that thought something was necessary: 78% said yes. To me, I interpreted it to say that people don't want to be for the bill and a significant number would never say they supported any specific plan, but they'd still be pissed if it got blocked.

Re: Did Pelosi Get Played?

The Great Depression didn't hurt the rich anything like it hurt the poor

The real rich are typically risk averse.

When you have 1 billion your personal enjoyment of life depends on keeping it.  Having 2 billion provides FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR less extra benefit to the rich guy than the difference between 0 billion and 1 billion.

The trader class which is in the middle and upper class but has no real savings and are typically not rich enough to retire are the ones hurt.

But the poor are totally destroyed.  Stock market was headed back up after 1 year during great depression.

Re: Did Pelosi Get Played?

That's the problem...everyone knows something needs to be done, but was this the best option? (Don't ask me; I'm no financial or economics guru.)

It's not as though Congress will now forget about the bailout for 6 months and will instead spend its time on freedom fries. I'm sure they'll go right back to work on a different, less-Bush-affiliated plan. Or rather, "plans"--I'm sure the floodgates will be open for all the various factions to start pushing ideas of their own. As I read somewhere else (Americablog? Eschaton?), this could be the greenlight for Democrats to now write a far more progressive bill instead of being stuck modifying Paulson's framework.

A bailout is going to happen in one form or another, and in a matter of days, not weeks. Hearing that the whole world will fall apart if we don't approve THIS bill NOW NOW NOW makes me wary.

Re: Did Pelosi Get Played?

Pelosi clearly stated as early as last week that she wouldn't even bring this to the floor for a vote if she wasn't assured that 100 GOPers were going to vote "yea".  Boehner probably told her he had that, or pretty close. (I'm sure the Dems would have settled for 90 GOPers)  But 63 just ain't cutting it - that's not bi-partisan enough.  The GOPers would then call this "the Dem bailout".  Can't have that, because it isn't theirs - it's Bush's and, by extension, the GOP's.  I'm sure once the Dem leadership realized the GOPers weren't even going to get close to 100 yeas, they probably told their members in less safe districts to vote "nay" if they wanted to.  That's how the game is played.  There would have been more Dem "yeas" if there were 90 or even 80 GOP "yeas".  This isn't Pelosi's fault.  It's the GOP's fault, and not just for their actions today or over the last 2-3 weeks.

Why could Mr. Fix-it McCain get 100 votes from his colleagues in the House?

Re: Did Pelosi Get Played?

67% of all Republicans voted AGAINST it.   They couldnt even come close to 50% supporting it.    The GOP is playing games and they are going to get called on it.

The Democrats came through and got a healthy majority of their caucus to support it.  Yeah, if 100% of Democrats voted for it it would have passed, but why should only the Democrats vote for it.

This needs to be a bi-partisan bill.   This needs to get healthy support from both sides of the aisle.   If just 12 Republicans switched, which still would have represented heavy GOP opposition, the bill would have passed.

This all comes down to the GOP is disarray and a scathing indictment of Bush.

Re: Did Pelosi Get Played?

The Republican House Leadership got their concessions and couldn't deliver more than 1/3 or thier caucus.  The Dems lost votes because of the concessions to the Repulbicans.

Both parties have to agree on a crap bill before it will pass.  No one wants to hold the bag on this one.

Bottom line is, even after giving in to the Republican demands, the Republican leadership couldn't deliver.  This is at thier feet now.

Now, if the Dems propose a new, better bill, one that includes homeower relief, oversite with teeth, real caps on executive pay, and then fail to pass it on a party line vote, then your complaints are valid.

People here do not give Nancy Pelosi enough credit.  She's not stupid, and she won't be fooled!

Re: Did Pelosi Get Played?

exactly.

make no mistake all these people asking why Dems didn't pass it alone.

if we did, the next thing you will see is EVERY dem who voted yes, would have their GOP opponent running against them, and the GOP would retake control.

that is NOT what we want, let the crisis play out and make sure people remember what got us here, but they will not pass off their failure on us and run against us on it.

If they want the economy to collapse so be it.

Re: Did Pelosi Get Played?

This is basically advocating a very high stakes games of chicken, with the penatly for losing being that homeownerhsip, retirement, college and maybe even employment becoming a pipe dream. Shame on all, both GOP and Republican who voted against this.

Re: Did Pelosi Get Played?

Inevitably, history does repeat itself.

A government caring little if anything about the most intense issues facing America's once vibrant middle class--to wit, unmanagable home mortgages, huge credit card debt, and a moribund health care system--and caring everything about wall street entrepreneurs facing their own deserved collapse from their own unbridled greed--is in its death throes.

The bailout was to secure Wall Street, not Main Street, and in the era of George Walker Bush, those streets do not run parallel.

Millions of Clinton voters like myself (eighteen million strong this year--officially, more than any other primary presidential candidate in United States history) have understood for some time that the Clinton White House years will likely stand as America's last Golden Age.

Assuming that Senator Obama wins this election by default, as seems now likely (although it is surprising that a Democratic candidate can be maintaining little more than a five point national lead when America is teeter-tottering close to total collapse), is he, as his adherents have long maintained, up to the task of fixing the mess?

Like millions of my fellow Clintonites, I truly believe that the nation can only be rendered whole again if the Clintons are to return to power.  Hillary Clinton's great crowd-pleasing comment in the Los Angeles debate said it all, then, and that comment is particularly apropos now: "It took a Clinton to clean up after the first Bush, and it will likely take another Clinton to clean up after the second Bush!"

My prayers are now that a President Obama swallows deeply his pride and appoints Bill and Hillary to the tasks of restoring both the nation's economic health and its foreign policy standing.  Give Hillary the position of "Economic and Health Care Czar" and appoint Bill to serve as a foreign policy secretary plenipotentiary.

Perhaps the nation still has a chance: a glimmer of hope made possible by the leaders of what is surely now America's last Golden Age.

Re: Did Pelosi Get Played?

You speak only for yourself.  Frankly, I find your benevolent dictatorship fantasy to be deeply troubling.  Even Bill Clinton relied on his economic advisors, a point that has apparently escaped you.

Dude, this is freaking hilarious!  Replace "Clinton" with "Huguenot," "Medici," or "Lancaster" for full dynastic effect.

Goose Step much?
My God, you people are really sick.  I am more glad than ever that I voted against her.   And not because of her policies, but because of the Drama of Bill.
This is nothing more than a cult of personality with the Clinton's.

Even his pathetic actions over the last two weeks in all but endorsing the McCain-Palin ticket show what a low-life he really is.

Re: Did Pelosi Get Played?

I think we were all played.  Look what these clowns did.  They claimed it was a big crisis and that we must bail the banks out or else the whole world would have spontaneous.  Then their own party derailed the bill that was supposed to save it.

Now it looks to me like the whole thing was just so the biggest fish could eat all the smaller fish without too much scrutiny.  If the bailout had gone through, the huge fish would have missed their buffet.

McCain blaming Obama

McCain really is the most pathetic person to ever head a major party ticket.    He claimed that he was going to Washington to solve the crisis and in the end he couldn't even get more than 33% of his party to support him.   Yes, support him because McCain supported the bill.

McCain is now blaming Obama for politicizing the process (as if 'suspending' a campaign was not a political stunt).

Re: Did Pelosi Get Played?

In my humble opinion both Pelosi and Reid suffer from an inability to deliver on the goods when a big issue is facing them.  Obama can get a lot done when he's President but for that to happen, he'll need better leadership in Congress.

Frick and Frack couldn't deliver a pizza if the house was next door to the pizza shop.

That Pelosi couldn't round up 12 more Democrats and get this bill past is a failure of leadership.  People can blame McCain for his poor leadership on this issue but Madame Speaker is in no better shape than he is.

Re: Did Pelosi Get Played?

NO WAY!  Nancy knew what the deal is.  this wasn't a great bill, and if repubs could pin the whole thing on democrats (after writing the damn thing themselves and coming up with only one completely ludicrous alternative plan), it would be disaster for the party.  this crapola bill wasn't worth risking all that.

hopefully, dems will now have the chance to write a bill that is worthwhile, incorporates the needed regulations, helps homeowners, and forces major controls on wall street whether they want it or not.  if and when that bill is crafted THAT will be the time to wrangle up every last dem vote and then motherfukcin*DARE* bush to veto it since he already declared that we're in a crisis!
