TN-09 Results Thread

Bumped - Cohen wins!

Polls close in just a few minutes at 8PM ET.

Obama put out a statement about the nasty race:

"These incendiary and personal attacks have no place in our politics, and will do nothing to help the good people of Tennessee. It's time to turn the page on a politics driven by negativity and division so that we can come together to lift up our communities and our country."

Predictions? Let's hope this divisive mess will end the right way...

I didn't notice Obama cutting any ad

for Cohen, a true progressive, like the ad Obama made for Barrow in Georgia.

Re: I didn't notice Obama cutting any ad

Wading into an incredibly nasty, racially and religiously divise congressional primary doesn't strike me as a great way to get elected to the Presidency.  It would have been nice if he'd helped Cohen, sure, but I can certainly understand why he would have steered clear of this.  That, and both of the really bad ads appeared in the last few days.  Way too late to do anything other than offer a statement.

There's that, and there's also the fact that the outcome was never in doubt.

Re: TN-09 Results Thread

I was glad Obama made a statement.  This style of politics will continue for so long as people perceive it to be effective.  Every time we join forces in denouncing it, we make a strong statement about the kind of future we want to move towards.

Re: TN-09 Results Thread

Fucking Tennessee.

Obama has come out swinging in this statement, as he should, but it shouldn't escape people's attention that if he had not done so, it would be regarded as a tacit approval of what Nikki Tinker is doing.

Meanwhile, when the Tennessee GOP pulls the same stunt, he has to swallow it, meekly accept the apology of the national Republican party and move on.

Hey neighbor  , how is it in NC .

I should be in Raleigh sometime in September , maybe I can catch one of those rallies Mccain or Obama .

Tennessee is not going to see any action and its no fun watching on local tv.

I haven't lived there in years though.

TN-01

What's going on with the Davis-Roe race? Why is Roe beating David Davis? And does that matter? It's a surprisingly close race.

Re: TN-09 Results Thread

I hope Tinker gets her ass handed to her.  And I am SICK of Emily's list.  If their sole criteria for an endorsement is 2 X chromosomes, despite the person being a scumbag, they have no business in politics... Ellen Malcolm should be cast out of politics and the party in general... I'm still pissed about them bad mouthing Naral just because they endorsed Obama in the primaries... I have no issue with their hillary endorsement mind you... but to endorse a piece of crap like Tinker, that is the last straw.  I have no problem with trying to get more women elected, but I want quality women, not women who are as bad as the GOP or maybe even worse.

Re: TN-09 Results Thread

I'm kinda baffled by the people who think EMILY's List is scummy because they endorsed a candidate who went on to do some shameful things.  If you don't think the goal of electing more pro-choice women is a worthy one for an organization, then don't support them, but don't expect them to have a crystal ball.

by Steve M 2008-08-07 05:27PM | 0 recs
Re: TN-09 Results Thread

I agree.  EMILY's List's goal is to elect pro-choice women to office.  They can't NOT endorse someone who fits both criteria.

Incidentally, by the way, Tinker is all-around sketchy; she didn't just unexpectedly turn out to be a bigot.

by Jess81 2008-08-07 05:39PM | 0 recs
Re: TN-09 Results Thread

Absolutely.

She's a worker crushing employment law attorney for an airline and she's got a whole nest of GOP supporters and donors.

This was just a really poor vetting job by EMILY's List... I have no problem giving them a mulligan, but I hope they look more closely next time.

Re: TN-09 Results Thread

THEN YOU STAY OUT OF THE PRIMARY!  AS pointed out, there are other candidates they haven't lifted a finger to help... look at some of their endorsements and look at the politics behind it... its more about the solidification of Malcolm's queen maker role than the actual stated agenda... otherwise you DON'T go after organizations that support much of your same goals, and you definately don't support a primary challenger against an incumbent who has a STRONGER PRO-CHOICE STANCE than the person you endorsed just because she is a woman (and has strong influential friends).  I will bet any amount of money that if Tinker wasn't part of Ford's machine, she NEVER would have been endorsed.

endorsing a pro-choice woman

against an anti-choice incumbent is great.

Endorsing a pro-choice woman running against other pro-choice Democrats in a primary is fine.

Endorsing a pro-choice woman against a pro-choice incumbent is not how I would like to see EMILY's list spending its resources.

Especially since we have good women candidate EMILY's list is not getting behind, such as Becky Greenwald in IA-04, running against a strongly anti-choice Republican.

Re: TN-09 Results Thread

Bullshit.  Supporting and getting someone elected SIMPLY because they are pro-choice AND a woman is idiotic.  Its simplistic politics... and further attacking a group whose purpose is to further one half of your claimed agenda is even worse (as Malcolm did to NARAL simply because they picked the candidate who happened to have a Y chromosome).  I'm sorry, but are you saying if a registered  Democrat is female and pro-choice but has a terrible record on other issues that they should still be endorsed?  Especially over a candidate who has a FULLY PRO CHOICE Naral rating.  Tinker has been a nasty person for years... its not like she is new to the scene or anything and there was nothing to judge her on... she was Harold Ford's protege and campaign manager I believe.    And just one more point... her stand on abortion is extremely weak...It sounds pretty much like lip service to me.  Very weak on the issue, IMO.  I can understand EL supporting a primary challenger against an anti-choice incumbent, but to endorse someone with a WEAKER stance on abortion JUST because she is a woman is ridiculous.  While EL has done some good, its always seemed like the list was started and more recently operated.. more for Ellen Malcolm's ego and desire to be one the highest influential kingmakers in the party.  When EL starts looking at endorsing more GOOD Democrats instead of crappy ones who happen to be female, then we'll talk.

Re: TN-09 Results Thread

There are groups that focus on supporting all sorts of underrepresented groups for election to Congress.  Usually they don't inspire this sort of rant about Y chromosomes though.

Now, I personally doubt they would have gotten involved in this primary if Cohen hadn't made that misogynistic comment about Hillary Clinton, but I have no proof of that.

by Steve M 2008-08-07 07:49PM | 0 recs
Re: TN-09 Results Thread

I agree that Malcolm's feud with NARAL was ridiculous, but as far as them endorsing Tinker?  That's basically their charter in action.

EMILY's list is one of many organization trying to get underrepresented groups elected.  If you think they should abandon their mission, that's a separate issue.

by Jess81 2008-08-08 12:29AM | 0 recs
Re: TN-09 Results Thread

As Meteor Blades has noted over on DailyKos, Tinker is in favor of abstinence-only education, so even her "pro-choice" stance is questionable.

EMILY's List messed up here, bigtime.

by BruinKid 2008-08-07 08:45PM | 0 recs
Great Point

I think that Ellen Malcolm has gone off the deep end and EMILYs list has jumped the shark.   She is still very bitter about NARAL endorsing Obama over Hillary and I think this group is now making bad judgements about who to endorse.

I think it is great to help get under-represented groups elected, but at the same time you don't stab allies in the back.

Re: TN-09 Results Thread

No crystal ball was necessary. Tinker's campaign was already anti-Semitic when Emily's List endorsed her. Her subsequent ads surprised nobody. Moreover, she was less pro-choice than Cohen. And this isn't the only instance in which Emily's List has ineffectively smeared a progressive Democrat for reasons of its own.

Re: TN-09 Results Thread

And that isn't to say they DON'T support some good candidates, they do... SOmetimes though Ellen Malcolm seems to have some questionable motives for the endorsements.  This being one of them.  I'd like to see more Darcy Burners on their list and less Nikki Tinkers.

by yitbos96bb 2008-08-07 07:40PM | 0 recs
Re: TN-09 Results Thread

The reason why Cohen faced a primary challenge from Emily's List was to exact revenge against his strong support for Obama in a Hillary state.  Expect more of these types of bogus primary challenges in the future.

Yay! But, her comments aside, she appears to have been a fringe candidate that got built up by Emily's list and the media. Fringe racists run in primaries all the time.

While I'm glad that the crap was tamped down, and she lost, one rarely hears about this stuff on the national level. I wonder what's different about this year? I wonder... I wonder...

Re: TN-09 Results Thread

I wasn't.

Given that black voters vote for white candidates about 99.9% of the time and obviously aren't phased by it, I honestly can't imagine what Ms. Tinker thought she was going to accomplish, other than to throw the Obama campaign a slow, hanging curve.

Someone should show these results to Pat Buchanan, so he'll shut the hell up about blacks being racist to whites simply because they are supporting Obama overwhelmingly.

Re: TN-09 Results Thread

Anyone else notice that Republican Rep. David Davis looks to have been knocked off? Is this good or bad?

by jdeeth 2008-08-07 09:09PM | 0 recs
Re: TN-09 Results Thread

Can't tell much at this point, Davis is a freshman who won an open seat by a bare plurality in a seriously crowded field in 2006, with only 22%.  The runner-up decided to run again, and in a head-to-head rematch he came up just ahead.  Both candidates are pretty much your standard wingers.  Possible that Davis was hurt simply by the fact that he's an incumbent in an anti-incumbent year.

The same thing might happen on August 12 in Colorado where freshman Rep. Doug Lamborn, elected under a similar situation in 2006, might get knocked off by the runner up from 2006, Jeff Crank.  Again, both of them fairly indistinguishable rightwingers.
