Obama Reaches Out To Clinton Donors

Despite clear signs that Clinton supporters are shifting to Obama without much trouble, the Obama campaign is doing a full court press to win over stragglers, particularly donors. To that end, this strikes me as a very smart move:

Barack Obama announced Thursday that he will help pay off Hillary Rodham Clinton's more than $20 million debt, personally writing a check in a gesture meant to win over her top financial backers.

Obama's true value to Clinton is mobilizing his list to help her pay off her debt, but as a symbolic gesture of his commitment to helping Hillary, Barack delivered a check to Hillary Clinton in the amount of $4,600 representing the max contribution by both him and Michelle to Hillary's campaign.

And in his meeting with more than 200 of Clinton's largest donors and fundraisers, the gesture went over very well.

Obama received a standing ovation from the crowd of more than 200 when he said he would enlist his supporters to help pay off her debt.

"I'm going to need Hillary by my side campaigning during his election, and I'm going to need all of you," Obama said, according to a report written by the only reporter allowed into the event and shared with other reporters afterward. He recounted how he had told his top fundraisers this week "to get out their checkbooks and start working to make sure Senator Clinton -- the debt that's out there needs to be taken care of."

Wisely, Hillary Clinton has announced that she won't seek assistance paying off the $12 million in debt that she personally loaned her campaign.

Its not like she needs the 12 million anyway... Bill gets something like 1 or 2 million for speeches (and that was in 2000) and I'm sure she will be even more popular on the speech circuit.  She'll get a new book deal... THAT debt will be paid off in no time... Obama will help with the 9 mill in campaign debt and she'll be all good.

Last time I checked, it was down to $10 million that she was paying down. If this is the case, her supporters are really continuing to help her out.

Re: Obama Reaches Out To Clinton Donors

You know, this whole episode has shown that shorn of her execrable advisers and her husband, she is a decent human being.

Bill seems likely a whiny baby though.

Re: Obama Reaches Out To Clinton Donors

You can say whatever you want to say; however, the 47% of Hillary supporters will not be jumping up and down for Obama anytime soon--if that is what you mean.

I know nothing short of the nomination will content you.

Thank goodness your candidate is more magnanimous than you are.

Re: Obama Reaches Out To Clinton Donors
I am not trying to kick up a dead horse here, but this move by Obama realy shows how he doesn't take things for granted. It looks like he is going to work  hard to get the Clinton supporters on board even though they are moving in that direction anyweay.
John McCain is going to have a hell of a time trying to keep moderate Repubs and Indies in his camp once Obama finishes shoring up the Democratic base and starts to invade McCains's turf.

Re: Obama Reaches Out To Clinton Donors

I believe that she is just going through the motions.  Barack should never have won, the press gave him a free ride.  The man is a flipper who will say and do anything to get elected.  Just ask Reverend Wright.  So much for the "new politics".  What a disappointment!!!

Re: Obama Reaches Out To Clinton Donors

Does Obama possess any egotism? He is giving his personal money to the wealthy Clinton's to pay for the smear commercials and pay for the development of the McCain talking points to be used against him for the next several months.

Is that turning the other cheek or what?

Don't look for much involvement of the Clintons in Obama's upcoming landslide. He doesn't need yesterdays heros for a new cutting edge future orientated campaign. It would be like my sons asking me for computer advise. Ridiculous!

He does not need my vote anyway, so I'll be leaning to vote for McCain or vote using some other option. The 53% of Hillary supporters are entitled to their own perogative.

You don't represent Hillary supporters. Go back to Red State.

The personal check is classy.  Sends a strong message and sets a good example, too.
