John Edwards Endorsement Speech Thread

Barack Obama is taking the stage at his rally where John Edwards will announce his endorsement of Obama.

Update [2008-5-14 18:48:48 by Todd Beeton]:"During the course of this campaign, I have gotten to know the candidates very well." He first wants to address Hillary Clinton. Way to stay classy, Grand Rapids, booing Hillary in this context. Sheesh.

Speaking about Hillary Clinton, Edwards said:

"It is very very hard to get up every day and do what she's done. It is hard to get out there and fight and speak up when the odds turn against you. What she has shown is strength and character and what drives her is something that each and every one of us should appreciate. She cares about working people...men and women in Iraq...she is a woman made of steel and she is a leader in this country not because of her husband but because of what she has done...When this nomination battle is over, brothers and sisters, we must come together as Democrats and in the fall stand up for the future of America to make America better. We are a stronger party because Hillary Clinton is a Democrat...and we will have a stronger presidential nominee in the fall because of her work."

Update [2008-5-14 18:54:0 by Josh Orton]: Apologies for stating the obvious, but noticeably not on stage: Elizabeth Edwards.

Update [2008-5-14 19:1:52 by Todd Beeton]:"What all of us believe is in this America that we love so much, no matter who you are, no matter who your family is and no matter the color of your skin, none of those things will control your destiny and that one America that I've talked about is not only possible but it will be achieved under President Barack Obama starting in January, 2009."

Re: How can everyone say Obama 'has won'

in 2012 we can switch to 'votes'

Right now we have delegates chosen by various methods.

You can't remove the three-point rule in the middle of a basketball game. You can't switch to primary votes(ignoring caucuses) over delegates in the final weeks.

But isn't it obvious?  Obama has zero popularity in Michigan.

when we switch to votes ...

Can we try counting only the ones where both candidates are on the ballot?

by obsessed 2008-05-14 03:58PM | 0 recs
Because one person willingly...

took their name off the ballot when not required to do so we must ignore the other person's success?

by JimR 2008-05-14 04:55PM | 0 recs
Re: Because one person willingly...

If making a case to the super delegates as to electability, it doesn't really matter why he took his name off the ballot because he's not going to take it off in November.

Re: DREAM TEAM !!

A truly moving speech.

This is why my sister worked for Edwards.

That complete imbecile, Pat Buchanan says the Edwards endorsement is a victory for Hillary.  No Really.  What a delusional jerk.

Re: DREAM TEAM !!

That's his job.

Day before the Pennsylvania primary, he predicts Clinton will win by "6-12".  She wins by 9, right in the middle.  All night long he goes "WHAT IS THIS? HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN TO THE FRONT RUNNER WHAT A SHOCK!"

Now he's saying the test of whether or not the endorsement is going to work is... wait for it...

Kentucky.

Forget it Jake, it's Clintontown.

Hillary's not gonna like that

Maybe you missed this from CNN.

Hillary said it would be a "terrible mistake" for her supporters to vote for John McCain over Barack Obama.

...

"Anybody who has ever voted for me or voted for Barack has much more in common in terms of what we want to see happen in our country and in the world with the other than they do with John McCain," Clinton said on CNN's "The Situation Room."

"I'm going to work my heart out for whoever our nominee is. Obviously, I'm still hoping to be that nominee, but I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that anyone who supported me ... understands what a grave error it would be not to vote for Sen. Obama."

by Fluffy Puff Marshmallow 2008-05-14 03:07PM | 0 recs
First cretins, now slime?
If you're going to insult, be a little classy.  Take a cue from Cyrano:
Ah no! young blade!  That was a trifle short!
You might have said at least a hundred things
By varying the tone. . .like this, suppose,. . .
Aggressive:  'Sir, if I had such a nose
I'd amputate it!'  Friendly:  'When you sup
  It must annoy you, dipping in your cup;
You need a drinking-bowl of special shape!'
  Descriptive:  ''Tis a rock!. . .a peak!. . .a cape!
--A cape, forsooth!  'Tis a peninsular!'
Curious:  'How serves that oblong capsular?
For scissor-sheath?  Or pot to hold your ink?'
Gracious:  'You love the little birds, I think?
I see you've managed with a fond research
To find their tiny claws a roomy perch!'
Truculent:  'When you smoke your pipe. . .suppose
That the tobacco-smoke spouts from your nose--
Do not the neighbors, as the fumes rise higher,
Cry terror-struck:  "The chimney is afire"?'
Considerate:  'Take care,. . .your head bowed low
By such a weight. . .lest head o'er heels you go!'
Tender:  'Pray get a small umbrella made,
Lest its bright color in the sun should fade!'
  Pedantic:  'That beast Aristophanes
  Names Hippocamelelephantoles
Must have possessed just such a solid lump
Of flesh and bone, beneath his forehead's bump!'
Cavalier:  'The last fashion, friend, that hook?
To hang your hat on?  'Tis a useful crook!'
Emphatic:  'No wind, O majestic nose,
Can give THEE cold!--save when the mistral blows!'
Dramatic:  'When it bleeds, what a Red Sea!'
  Admiring:  'Sign for a perfumery!'
Lyric:  'Is this a conch?. . .a Triton you?'
Simple:  'When is the monument on view?'
Rustic:  'That thing a nose?  Marry-come-up!
'Tis a dwarf pumpkin, or a prize turnip!'
  Military:  'Point against cavalry!'
Practical:  'Put it in a lottery!
Assuredly 'twould be the biggest prize!'
  Or. . .parodying Pyramus' sighs. . .
'Behold the nose that mars the harmony
Of its master's phiz! blushing its treachery!'
--Such, my dear sir, is what you might have said,
Had you of wit or letters the least jot:
But, O most lamentable man!--of wit
You never had an atom, and of letters
You have three letters only!--they spell Ass!
And--had you had the necessary wit,
To serve me all the pleasantries I quote
Before this noble audience. . .e'en so,
You would not have been let to utter one--
Nay, not the half or quarter of such jest!
I take them from myself all in good part,
But not from any other man that breathes!

The booing of a fellow Democrat is atrocious and needs to be ceased immediately, everywhere.

That being said, Edwards truly is doing this at a perfect time.  Sweeps every WV Blowout off of the headlines and keeps the distractions to a minimum.

There will be a President Barack Obama.  We need to start focusing on this now.

When people raise points about Obama's lack of...

substance or of viable solutions, the Obama people always come back with these loyalty arguments, and never address the point at all.

That makes me ill.

Re: When people raise points about Obama's lack of
They never address your "points" because they don't exist. Half of the media coverage of this campaign has trumpeted that Obama and Hillary have nearly the same policy and prescriptions for the issues we face. So are you saying every single person covering the race is lying, or that Hillary is equally without substance? Are Hillary's solutions, universally described as nearly identical to Obama's not viable? Of course not. You're just repeating a GOP talking point: that Obama has no substance, blah blah.

I was extremely disappointed by the booing. It was uncalled for an unnecessary. I've been very upset by the kind of negative campaign Hillary has run, but that was not appropriate.

There is even a specific group on MyBO to try to sap that crap out of the crowds, but as we all know the emotions run high.

Re: what a traitor to me

Robert,

We are friends... so, I'll be nice...

The fact is, Obama was being very nice to Hillary... He gave her WV without any fight... it was a gift...  How did she repay his gift?  "Oh, I'm in it 'til the end.. I'm going to fight even harder against you, Barack."

So, no more Mr. Nice Guy.  She had her chance, now Obama has to play hardball.

by LordMike 2008-05-14 03:48PM | 0 recs
no gift

Not at all, he poured money into the area and did campaign.  I'm sorry, I think the treatment of Hillary Clinton is horrific, I think this is obvious timing and on top of it, she has the better positions, bottom line.

by Robert Oak 2008-05-14 04:18PM | 0 recs
Re: no gift

And I think her treatment of Obama is horrific...  absolutely horrible!  She has belittled him since the beginning, while he has always given her respect and deferred to her strengths.   He put some money in WV, yes, but he only visited once... he was throwing a softball to Hillary for her to hit it out of the park and go out with a winning note....  and yes, the Edwards thing is obvious timing... the press wanted to bring up the dead horse that has been her campaign since February...  Her campaign was pushing for a convention floor fight...  Since she won't give up, neither will he...

She may have the better positions, but with her recent embrace of right wing talking points and endorsements by Pat Buchannan and Fox News post February, I don't see how any of her policies would ever see the light of day.  She doesn't want to appear "leftist" anymore...  In fact, I think she likes being the conservative.  If she were to win the nomination, I'd bet she'd probably run to the right of John McCain and call him a flip flopping liberal!

I don't know where she stands anymore... She keeps changing her persona, stances on the issues... who is she?  Her campaign keeps changing its message every week... I don't trust her... not in a nefarious way, but I just don't know what she stands for anymore... it keeps changing day by day...

by LordMike 2008-05-14 05:27PM | 0 recs
Lord Mike

you are a Hillary hater and probably, Im sorry to say, a misogynist.  I've explained many times the positions and you don't want to hear it, you are just interested in hating Hillary and at this point I am truly disgusted by misogyny that I see on the blogs.  I'm not kidding.

by Robert Oak 2008-05-14 11:16PM | 0 recs
Re: Lord Mike

A misogynist?  Really?  How so?

Yes, I don't like Hillary... I don't like what her husband did to the party in the 90's.  I don't like her sense of entitlement.  I don't like that she validated Fox News.  I don't like that she kneecapped other democrats.  I don't like that she not only smeared Obama, but even Edwards early on using right wing framing (attacking him as a trial lawyer ).  I don't like her running a republican-style campaign.  I don't like her war vote.  I don't like that she doesn't acknowledge progressives.

I don't like a lot of things, but ABSOLUTELY NONE of them relate to her gender.  In fact, a year ago, I was a supporter of hers.  I defended her vociferously at dKos.  She's the one who lost me.  And she lost me when she threw the kitchen sink.  Then I started to realize why her negatives were so high...  She's earned them.  As time has gone on, I've really been disappointed in her campaign. It's excluded people like us.  She doesn't WANT my vote, and she's made that very clear.  I'm too educated, in her campaign's mind, to matter.  Since she doesn't want my support, I'm not going to pretend to give it.

A lot of the stuff we talked about in regards to trade occurred after WI... when the nomination was effectively over.  I had a tough call to make in OH.  I took a chance at the new guy, 'cos he had essentially already won...  I fully admit that I may have backed the wrong horse in regards to trade, but I made that choice and I'm all in.  I have to be.  If we lose the netroots will be purged by the DLC'ers... I'm taking a chance... but, I think it's chance worth taking...  I think this guy is a realignment candidate that could give us another decade of total democratic rule.  I'm willing to take a chance on the people powered candidate.

The race has been over for several months, now... the media has made it seem otherwise, but the fact is, the party needs to come together... and I think this guy can lead us to great things... I really do!

I know you are frustrated, Robert, and concerned.... I am, too.  I'm taking a chance, just as you are, but I think that it's the right choice... (just as you do)...  Let's stay civil.  We still have a lot of jobs to fight for.  A larger congressional and senate majority will help us reach that goal.  We can at least agree on that, can't we?  I hope so.

Peace,

Mike

by LordMike 2008-05-14 11:49PM | 0 recs

Because I've pointed out repeatedly that Hillary isn't Bill, her votes her legislation, per position statements her plans are more Progressive and Populist than Obama's and as you know obviously I dig deep and am highly critical as well.
Yet time after time, all you go and do is continue to post these lies and smears.

You're not alone, the misogyny against Clinton is astounding.

by Robert Oak 2008-05-15 08:05AM | 0 recs
Re: you are

Hillary claims her first lady experience counts, so I take her at her word.  She's not running a progressive campaign.  How can I trust that her policies are more progressive when they are praised by the likes of Fox News?

And how is ANY of this sexism? It has NOTHING to do with her gender.... nothing!  I'd be saying the same thing if Joe Biden were in second place and doing the same things, and I'd be just as mad about it.

Are you actually saying that 'cos Hillary is a woman, I should approve of her surrogates going on Fox News day after day, of her meeting with Richard Scaife?  That I should approve of her campaign tactics?  I don't get what you are trying to say!

I know we've talked policy, but I'm talking campaigning.  She's run a horrible campaign and one that does not inspire my trust, especially when she keeps changing the rules every two minutes.  How you relate that to her gender, I don't know.  I relate it to her being a sore loser... which is, again, nothing to do with her gender at all...

The general charges of sexism by Hillary supporters have no foundation.  Unless you believe that Hillary should get special treatment (which she has, BTW, anyone else would have been declared the official loser long ago).  Asking for favorable or special treatment for a candidate who certainly can stand up on her own is certainly not inline with feminist ideals.  I know.  I married one.  She supports Obama and is very disappointed in Hillary.  Is she a sexist, too?

These accusations have no basis in fact, only projections of your disappointment.  Please stop, Robert.  The idea that you are somehow contractually required to support a candidate based on gender or be labeled a sexist is fundamentally wrong.

I'm an Obama supporter

but I thought the endorsement was lame.  he should have talked more about all of us coming together, about how Obama was the right candidate for the working class, and about Obama's qualifications.  Instead he just gave his stump speech.  Lame.

Much lamer however was the Obama supporters booing his gracious words about Hillary.  Come on people, get a fucking clue.  I don't care how much you have grown to despise her or whatever, that is just plain classless and also it's shooting ourselves in the foot.  We need Hillary supporters to unify with us and being sore winners is even uglier than being sore losers.

Re: I'm an Obama supporter

Agreed about Edwards' speech.  Never cared for the guy myself, and I got real tired of his stump.  But his endorsement cannot hurt.  It can only help.

I sensed that JRE had the fire in him to go out there and do it all again. He loved the stage and he obviously missed it.

I just read Edwards' speech and he was

very very very gracious. At some point, i thought i was reading the wrong speech or maybe the headline was wrong and Edwards was endorsing Hillary.

A very gracious speech and a good endorsement. Maybe if he campaigns with Obama he can sell him to working class folks with whom Obama is having a very tough time and without whom he won't win.

I also think that Edwards has his time as a VP and i don't think he will make a good one to be honest with you.

If Obama has to pick someone from the democratic primaries, why would he pick someone who won only about 10% (maybe even less) of votes instead of someone who won 49%? If Senator Obama has to pick one of the democratic candidate from primaries so he does not have to introduce him to the American people, he has to pick Senator Clinton.  I still believe that an Obama/Clinton is a unbeatable ticket and it would garner about 340 EV at least.

I cannot agree with you more!

This is precisely why I found it ironic while he endorsed Obama, his short speech about Hillary Clinton is far more substantive (about HRC's quality as a leader) than anything he said about BO.  Lame indeed.  People who were booing should realize that what they were doing is against everything BO  had talked about.  Lamer indeed.

Elizabeth Edwards

Apologies for stating the obvious, but noticeably not on stage: Elizabeth Edwards.

What's the point? She's an adult, she gets to endorse whomever she wants, or nobody at all.

Re: John Edwards Endorsement Speech Thread

MSNBC has got to get rid of Pat Buchanan.  Pundits are pundits and I don't want them all to agree with me but he is nothing but a Republican shill.  They need to retire him.  I'm so sick of watching him go along with the right-wing game of acting like they love Hillary Clinton...such bullshit.

Thanks, John. thanks a whole lot!

wrong timing and dishonest speech
  • how desperate obama people should be that they trying to distract from WV disaster?
  • John's speech was great as usual until one moment when he ruined everything he said and made me disbelieve IMMDIDEATELY.
  • In the middle of the speech John made a a huge mistake and said something totally different from what he said many times before: he said that it is only ONE man who knows what to do and this man is Obama.
  • WTF?
  • Obama has no specifics and John said it many times. Now John sounds like member of the friken Cult.
  • Go away, Mr. Edwards your endorsement means nothing now; you are loser (and dishonest lier) endorsing another loser.
  • Obama's health plan is wrong and everybody knows it, including EDWARDS. Shame on you, loser.

Re: wrong timing and dishonest speech

Not to point out the obvious, but I would imagine this would be a very different set of bullet points if Edwards endorsed Hillary today.

*Edwards is great!
*Clinton/Edwards '08!
*Did I mention Edwards is great?
*What a awesome day for Hillary!
*Edwards is such a stand up guy, not a liar at all!

A.  Great, well organized, bullet-point presentation you gave there.
3.  Classy use of the favorite "shame on you".
3c.2.  Extra credit for multiple use of the word "loser".

Re: wrong timing and dishonest speech

"Obama has no specifics and John said it many times."

So perhaps in those discussions between Obama and Edwards, they possibly discussed some of the specifics?

Hmm, but do pretend that what's bothering you isn't that he didn't endorse Clinton. It's amusing.

Re: John Edwards Endorsement Speech Thread

how desperate obama people should be that they trying to distract from WV disaster?

The disaster of WV has nothing to do with impeding Obama's candidacy. It has to do with ugly, hateful ignorance. This, below, is what you guys are championing and identifying yourselves and your candidate with:

Re: John Edwards Endorsement Speech Thread

Fascinating video.  Thanks for that.

Obviously, ignorance and racism didn't motivate every West Virginian who voted for Hillary.

But to ignore their presence is to ignore a much larger issue.  It's scary as hell to see lifelong "Democrats" so eager to move over to McCain because they're just "uncomfortable" with Obama.

Re: John Edwards Endorsement Speech Thread

In all seriousness, I'm here and frankly I like Obama AND Hillary, although in the end I chose Obama.  I have to say, it's really odd to see a democrat not just critical but downright hateful of a candidate that's part of our party.  I hope for your sake that you'll take some time to put things in perspective and perhaps take some time off to cool off.  This stuff? Not helpful and not healthy.

Just, IMHO.

Re: The Booing

I was there.  Most of it was coming from the people closest to the stage.  There was some cheering for Clinton too.  It wasn't as bad as it sounds in the video.  It certainly wasn't all 12,000 people there so take it easy on 'Grand Rapids.'

It Was Amazing

I was on the main floor about 20 feet to the left of all the cameras, about fifty feet away from the podium.  The crowd was electric.  The mixed booing of Clinton was the low point, but overall two GREAT speeches... it really felt like a turning point in the campaign.

Obama proved to me why I support him.  A big part of it is that he's classier than most of the people who advocate for him at dKos all day long.
