NC-Sen: Kay Hagan Fighting Back

Goal Thermometer

Kay Hagan, Elizabeth Dole's Democratic challenger for the North Carolina Senate seat, hit back quickly today against the despicable ad Dole ran against her, which accused Hagan of, essentially, being "godless." Not only did Hagan, who is an elder at her church and a Sunday school teacher, hold a conference call with reporters and call for Dole to pull the ad, but her campaign has already produced two response ads and put up a "This kind of politics will not be tolerated" ActBlue page on which she writes:

Elizabeth Dole should be absolutely ashamed of herself. I can't begin to tell you how outraged I am that she has attacked my Christian faith. Her latest ad is fabricated and pathetic. Enough. This kind of politics will not be tolerated.

We already have two response ads - watch them below - and please donate $100, $50 or $25 to help me directly respond to Dole's desperate, divisive and deplorable ads in a third ad.

Your support at this critical time is imperative to our success. But even more so - your support right now is imperative to change the politics of our country.

We need a new direction - leadership that will bring people together, not tear people apart. Leadership that offers new solutions, not the same old, tired rhetoric. The people of North Carolina have had enough. No more. It's about time for a change.

Best,
Kay

Watch the ads below:

Public Policy Polling, a Democratic polling firm out of NC, has often called the Hagan campaign one of the best run of the cycle and the rapid response against Dole really proves that point. Will this sort of smear from Dole work anyway? Tom Jensen of PPP doesn't think so and offers a silver lining to the Dole attack: it's a sure sign that "Kay Hagan's Winning":

Two thoughts occur to me today indicating that Kay Hagan is really winning her race (beyond the fact that eight of our polls in a row have shown that):

-The Dole campaign hasn't floated an internal poll, at least that I'm aware of, since July. [...]

-Their new Godless Americans ad simply smacks of desperation.

Let's make sure Hagan keeps on winning by contributing to her campaign at our Road To 60 ActBlue page. Hagan is currently at 153 donors. Let's show Elizabeth Dole that those tactics won't work this time by getting Hagan up to 200.

"who is an elder at her church and a Sunday school teacher"

Well, way to neither mention that nor deny Dole's allegations. These ads read like an attempt to change the subject from an accurate ad, not an attempt to condemn an inaccurate ad.

Bad misstep.

Respectfully, I disagree

I loved both of these ads.

I think this has gotten so much media -- let the press point out that Hagen is a Sunday school teacher; it has more credibility.  Otherwise, it feels like "You're a godless heathen!" "No, I'm not!" "Yes you are!"  "No I'm not!"

If you know that the media are already doing a decent job of reporting the facts in this case, then not even acknowledging the specifics of the allegation can help to brush it off as ridiculous.

The first ad is sincere and positive, and I think it succeeds in creating trust.  The second ad strikes the perfect tone -- it's way negative, yet doesn't come across like the typical scary-music-black-and-white-scary-voiceo ver negative ad.  The transition to Hagen herself speaking doesn't feel forced, as it often does in these types of neg to pos ads.

No groundbreaking formats here, just really well-executed ads that will accomplish what they are supposed to accomplish.  (IMHO.)

the "godless" ad is one of the worst

I've seen all year, which is saying something.

Hopefully Dole will not only lose but forever ruin her reputation for southern grace or whatever it is the beltway media seemed to like about her.

Ed Rollins last night

Said this is the result of the Charlie Black contingent parachuting (just like into the McCain campaign) in when it was clear Liddy was in trouble.

He called the ad shameful.

And he is right.

Liddy has thrown over any sembelance of this image of southern politiness, or that she is one of the good ones.

She's a pig, who wallows in dirt. There is NO worse slam down south, and she knows it.

I hope that Kay sends her political career to the dustbin of history, and it's the last we hear of Liddy Dole.

Re: NC-Sen: Kay Hagan Fighting Back

Looks like separation of church and state is meaningless in the bible thumper states of North & South Carolina.

The right wing attack machine is really putting forth an admirable effort to sling as much dirt as they can to try and win the countless elections they are sure to lose. Its almost laughable what they will do to win elections...

Right Wing radio spouting off at the mouth suggesting that, if elected, Obama will institute Sharia and make America an Islamic state.

Michele Bachmann's "anti-American" comment about Obama on MSNBC's "Hardball" helped her opponent, Elwyn Tinklenberg, raise over $700,000 in a weekend.

And the Democrats don't get it?

This is one Independent that will be placing across-the-board votes for the D's in 5 days.
