Hillary Going After Oil Companies in NH

Under pressure from both Obama and Edwards Sen. Clinton is letting her inner populist loose. Check out this video from the NY Times of her speaking out about the stranglehold that the oil companies have on pricing power.

Jerome has blogged before about the huge scandals at Bush's Dept of the Interior not collecting the royalties the public is owed by the oil companies for petroleum taken from public lands. I'd like to see Clinton promise to do something about that. Same for Obama and Edwards.

Full transcript of Senator Clinton's comments from the video after the jump.

I'll tell you what.  In my inaugural speech, I'm going to serve notice on the oil companies and on the oil producing countries:  that we are not going to be taken advantage of any longer, that we are going to once again be in charge of our future.

And I can tell you what'll happen.

You know, the oil producing countries and the oil companies will have a conversation.  They have a cartel in case you haven't noticed.

And they'll drop the price of oil because they figure they've done it before, they'll do it again.   They'll take the political heat off.  Everybody will say "Oh, great, did you see how much the gas price has fallen? Oh, we don't have to worry about this anymore."

It's like the old story about how to boil a frog.  You drop a frog in boiling water, it jumps right out.  You drop it in cold water, you turn the heat up - you've got a boiled frog before too long.  We have been the boiled frog in this story, for decades.

Well, not on my watch.  We are going to get out of that pan and we're going to be back in charge.  And we're going to show the world what we can do when we put our minds to it.

Re: Hillary Going After Oil Companies in NH

Too little, too late. JRE was on this at least a year ago. This is part and parcel with HRC telling us that she's an agent of change. If she believed this, it would have been her campaign's theme, instead of vote for me because my husband was (and still is) a very popular Democrat.

From her cozy relationship with lobbyists to her cozy relationship with Rupert Murdoch, Hillary doesn't offer America any substantial change.

Re: WRONG

Yes she's been doing this for a while

And didn't she also vote against the energy bill while Obama voted for it.

Re: WRONG

Yea, that was an interesting distinction, why did they wait till now to bring that out?

Maybe if Hillary hadn't been sitting on her ass waiting for the election to come to her, she wouldn't be in panic mode right now. She should have been - yes - TALKING about this long ago.

Mark Penn strikes again

Probably too little, and way too late -- it's good to see her make this case, but why didn't we see this kind of fire last year?

Mark Penn helped the Clinton's get back on top after the 1994 election disaster, but his triangulation strategy had run it's useful course by the Spring of 1996. In June of that year, I saw a poll that showed generic Dems and GOP even with senior voters, which was a net loss of 7 points from December. My alarm bells went off, because I knew that if Bill Clinton didn't spend his political capital to elect a Democratic Congress, Ken Starr was going to be trouble. Little did I know  . . .

At any rate, Clinton didn't roll out the coattails until October, and the GOP retained control of the House.

The Clintons were ill served by Mark Penn then, and he's led Hillary into a do or die last stand now.

Mark Penn -- screwing up the Democratic Party since 1996!

Re: Hillary Going After Oil Companies in NH

This issue should be a gimme --- Big Energy is screwing taxpayers and cheating the American people by underpaying royalties for drilling on OUR lands...

Bully for Hillary for speaking out on it.

Will Obama show similar leadership in demanding accountability from the Oil Companies???

Re: Hillary Going After Oil Companies in NH

Not only has Hillary has been speaking out against the oil companies and drug companies but she has been voting against them too! She has been fighting for the middle class before Obama ever went to college. As President she will bring change and a lot of it too!

Re: Hillary Going After Oil Companies in NH

Edwards may not win the nomination...however,;
Few can doubt his impact on both Obama and Clinton on a range of issues.

Let us have a Primary where the main issue becomes
"I am more against entrenched interests than you."

...and let this spread to Democratic House Primaries.

anything is possible...
Peter Garrett is now the Federal Environment Minister in Australia..
Who is Peter Garrett? hmmm a clue...
