Lieberman's Parking Job

This is a picture of Joe Lieberman's car parked in a handicapped space:

Maybe he actually is handicapped--I don't know. I do know that you are supposed to have a sticker on your car if you are parking in a handicapped space. Otherwise, you are just acting with a sense of entitlement as you take something that is reserved for someone else.

And why does his plate have a big number "2" on it? I'll leave this one open to a caption contest.

Mentally handicapped, maybe? n/t

Re: Mentally handicapped, maybe? n/t

My position has always been that anyone who parks in a handicapped space is handicapped — in one way or another. If not physiaclly, then mentally or ethically.

Re: Mentally handicapped, maybe? n/t

That's what my sister and I always say when we see people without proper permits parking in handicapped spaces. Sis uses a walker and oxygen and I have severe arthritis, so we both qualify for and need the spaces. Often we'll watch people park in handicapped spaces, practically jump out of their cars and run into buildings, so obviously healthy that they're racing past other people.

Folks like Holy Joe and other scofflaws disgust me because their arrogance and insensitivity can make it damn near impossible for people with disabilities to go places. I can't even count the number of times we have actually had to give up on going to appointments or stores simply because we couldn't park close enough to the entrance and were unable to walk in. Part of that is due to the fact that there is more demand than spaces, but there are a significant number of people who park illegally. How does Lieberman know that his actions didn't deny an elderly or disabled person access to that venue? Shame on him and anyone else inconsiderate enough to abuse parking privileges while able-bodied.

So George Bush can quote

one of his favorite lines from Austin Powers, International Man of Mystery (supposedly a favorite movie of his) when he talks to Joe:

"Who does Number Two work for?"

And then Rove yells, "That's right, you show that turd who's boss."

Rasmussen poll has Liberman at 45 and Lamont at 43. If correct, this is huge. Last poll I saw had Lieberman up by 13.

Last Lieberman Lamont thread had Firestorm taking a lot of heat...but Firestrom is no lightweight

I also think it's pretty amazing that the parking job is so crappy. I mean, the guy trying to use the parking space to his left won't be able to open his door, so he's effectively taking up "2" handicapped parking spaces. And those spaces are really wide compared to non-handicapped spaces.

by NCDem 2006-09-15 10:19AM | 0 recs
Not quite

Although the parking job is pretty crummy. To the left is that crosshatching that denotes "No parking at all". That's where people are supposed to walk and go up the curb cut to where they need to go.

The side mirror might be a touch in the way for those on foot.

Re: Lieberman's Parking Job

I think in some places politicians are given special license plates.  I recall visiting DC and seeing a lot of special diplomatic plates and such with funny numbers.

To be fair, it's possible that he has one of those things that hangs from the rear view mirror instead of a sticker - but what's his disability?  Obviously, you don't necessarily have to be paralyzed to use a handicap spot, but does he have any significant health difficulties that would require he use the spot?

by fwiffo 2006-09-15 10:23AM | 0 recs
Re: Lieberman's Parking Job

If Lieberman wasn't driving the car and he had a physical disability which necessitated the use of a handicapped parking spot, then he would in fact have what's called a "placard", which hangs from the mirror.  We have one, due to our son's disability.  They are not exactly easy to obtain, and have to be signed for by a physician.  Generally, only specific conditions, such as restricted mobility, heart and respiratory disease and neurological disabilities qualify.

If Lieberman's driver had a qualifying disability, then the car would have a handicapped license plate.

Re: Lieberman's Parking Job

My Dad had brain surgery and had a placard, but it was temporary (he wouldn't need it once his recovery was complete), so he never had the handicapped plate.

I was just noting the posibility that he might have a placard because it's not possible to tell from the picture (though it appears that he doesn't have one from other information available now).

Re: Lieberman's Parking Job
The 2 is a prestige thing.
License plates in Connecticut allow numbers to be kept, and passed from car to car, and generation to generation.
So having a number that has been use for as long as there have been license plates is a status thing.
My guess is that one of his supporters gave it to him as a gift a long time ago.

Re: Lieberman's Parking Job

Maybe I am old school but this seems a bit much.  I want Lieberman to hit the political concrete hard - meaning face first - but isn't this a little invasive and disturbing?

Okay, make sure he's got a lawful sticker - fine.  Lieberman is a political sellout but I doubt that he is stupid enough to risk a disaster by parking illegally in a car with a distinctive plate number in broad daylight.  Even if he is, that's as far as it should go.

If the vehicle were marked as a campaign vehicle, fair game, but this is just creepy in my view.  Maybe I am taking the narrow view.

Re: Lieberman's Parking Job

I personally don't give a hoot about how it looks politically - but just don't post the picture if you're not planning on sending it in to law enforcement.  He (or his driver) broke the law, and there is a significant fine and points against one's license for illegally parking in such spots.  This shouldn't just be an online smack-down - if you really care about upholding accessiblity laws, then demand Lieberman be held legally accountable.  If not, then don't claim to actually care about the disabled any more than Lieberman.

Re: Lieberman's Parking Job

I'm someone who thinks it should be legal, even encouraged, to break the knee caps of people who abuse handicapped spaces with a large monkey wrench, whether it's Joe Lieberman, Angelina Jolie, or the Pope. And I would've said that even when I liked the pope.

So maybe I'm not objective on this.

Alternately, for fans of "The Prisoner", if Lieberman is number two, who is number one? (Yeah, I know, someone said it was Dodd)

Also, if the plate has any signifigance to Lieberman's official capacity, we should insist he give it to Lamont as part of the change over.

Re: Lieberman's Parking Job

Over at LamontBlog, Anonymous @4:48pm asks a good question.  "The registration sticker is visible on the whole car picture, but is missing on the close up. What gives?"  (They have a closeup of the license plate there, and his description is accurate.  Click on the car pic here to see both pix at Lamontblog.)

Are we sure this pic is legit?  Who took it?  Do we know that this is Lieberman's car, and if so, how do we know this?

This picture is only worth a thousand words if we can show it is what we're making it out to be.  Otherwise, it's just a funny picture that may or may not mean anything.

Re: Lieberman's Parking Job

If you look closely at the photos, you can see that the pic without a sticker on the plate is from the front of the car. The car body areas around each photo are different.  Hence, only the rear plate has the sticker.  In some states (like here in MA) they only issue a rear plate sticker.  Also, those plates pass on to whoever the sitting Senator is.  Ned will have them come January.  Should Dodd either retire, or move to the White House, Ned gets his plate, Dodd's replacement gets Ned's, and so on.

Re: Lieberman's Parking Job

OK, the sticker explanation makes sense.  (Though with a digital photo, they presumably could have used a blow-up of part of the same photo as the close-up.  And should have.)
